Chabad of Greenwich ‘skinned knee’ lecture draws 200

Greenwich, CT — Almost 200 people attended parenting conference on April 30 at the Englanders home in Greenwich to hear the lecture of Wendy Mogel’s the author of the book The blessing of the Skinned Knee.

The lecture was aimed for couples who want to learn about parenting.

Chabad hosts, once a month, guest lectures that address the congregation at the Kiddush (12:15 p.m.) on a wide variety of issues facing Jewish life today.

New York Chabadniks tour Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan, Canada — Two rabbinical students from New York’s Chabad Lubavitch movement are in Saskatchewan to meet Jews across the province.

“The main purpose is to electrify Judaism a little, bring in a fresh burst,” Shmuli Raitman, 22, who is originally from Melbourne, Australia, said in a phone interview.

“The Jewish population of Regina is like [the population of] one building on the Upper West Side [of Manhattan],” said his travel mate, Rabbi Yisrael Kugel, 23, who is from New York.

Man wanted for shooting cop is found

Pocono Mountains, PA — Pennsylvania State Troopers have apprehended suspected New York City cop-shooter Dexter Bostic in the Poconos and are believed to be in hot pursuit of the other suspect.

Bostic, a 34-year-old ex-convict, and a second suspect, Robert J. Ellis, 34, have been the subjects of a far-reaching manhunt since the monday morning shooting that left one officer with life-threatening injuries.

The critically injured officer, Belarus-born Russel Timoshenko, 23, is paralyzed, has brain swelling and cannot breathe on his own, Assistant District Attorney Anna-Siegga Nicolazzi said at an appearance for the third suspect, held today in a courtroom packed with police officers.

New Shluchim to New Jersey

Rabbi Yitzchak and Mrs. Miriam (nee Eber) Sebbag of Crown Heights have just moved on Shlichus to Passaic, NJ where they will establish a new Chabad House and Chai Tots Preschool for the Jewish residents in Passaic and Clifton, New Jersey.

Then new Shluchim were appointed by Rabbi Michel Gurkov of Chabad of Passaic County.

Shliach attacked in the Ukraine

Zhitomir, Ukraine — Ukrainian youths attacked a rabbi and tried to break into a Jewish school.

Rabbi Shlomo Wilhelm was attacked in the yard of his shul on Monday evening in the city of Zhitomir, in central Ukraine. Synagogue guards and local community members held off the unidentified attackers. The same day, a group of youths tried to break into the dormitory for girls at a local Jewish school, hurling verbal insults at the students. Police are investigating.

Wilhelm told JTA the attacks were not the first acts of anti-Jewish violence in town. Two years ago Wilhelm was verbally assaulted and beaten on one of the city’s main streets.

Prayer Vigil to be held for Injured Cop

Crown Heights, Brooklyn — At 5:00pm today a prayer vigil will be held in front of the 71st Precinct for Officer Russell Timoshenko who was shot twice in the head and neck early Monday morning while performing a traffic stop along with his partner Officer Herman Yan.

Officer Yan was released yesterday from Kings County Hospital to his home following the injuries he sustained after his bulletproof vest stopped a bullet that may have killed him. Officer Timoshenko is laying in a coma in the hospital with a bullet still lodged in his head.

Religious leaders and community leaders along with residents and Police Officers are expected to attend the vigil that will be held in front of the 71st Precinct on New York Ave and Empire Blvd. The public is invited to attend.

Crown Heights, Brooklyn — One man was arrested today in connection with the shooting on Monday of two New York City police officers in Brooklyn during a traffic stop. Lee Wood, 29, evidently the previously unidentified third man in the car that the officers stopped, was taken into custody, the police said.

Kiev, Ukraine — Once a relatively obscure rabbi, Moishe-Leyb Kolesnik is now a budding celebrity throughout Ukraine.

“I saw you on national television – quite often I hear this on the street,” said Kolesnik, a Chabad Lubavitch rabbi in his native town of Ivano-Frankovsk in western Ukraine.

The rabbi owes his sudden wave of fame to several appearances on “613,” a Jewish-themed show that is broadcast biweekly on UT-1, the main state-run channel in Ukraine. According to Kolesnik, most of those who recognize him on the street are non-Jews, as are the majority of the show’s audience.

Zhitomir Jews Get New Mikvah

Zhitomir, Ukraine — A monumental event has taken place in Zhitomir. The new Mikvah, housed in a separate building, has finally opened. The old Mikvah was located elsewhere, in a building recently condemned due to its age, which is soon slated for destruction.

Rabbi Shlomo Wilhelm, who serves as the Chief Rabbi of Zhitomir, Central and Western Ukraine, led the initiative to construct a new building to serve as a Mikvah. He worked closely with the organization ‘Union of Zhitomir Jews’ to make this a reality.

Landmark Manual Published for Jewish History Teachers

Dneprodzerzhinsk, Ukraine — A presentation took place for the new teachers’ manual “The People of Israel are Alive”, which is aimed at eighth graders attending Jewish schools. The Ohr Avner Chabad Day School in Dneprodzerzhinsk is the first institution to use this book.

This successful project will benefit children in learning about the life of European Jews from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The teacher’s manual also includes methodological recommendations for teachers, maps, a glossary, and chronological charts (timelines showing the creation of the world until the modern era).
