The Weekly Sedra – Parshas Mishpatim – Church and State

Rabbi Yossi Kahanov Shliach to Jacksonville, FL

The highlight of last week’s Torah portion was the Ten Commandments. Our portion – Mishpatim – opens with the statement: And these are the ordinances.”

Rashi comments that the juxtaposition of this portion- which deals primarily with civil and tort law – and the Ten Commandments discussed last week, teaches us that just as the holy Ten Commandments originated at Sinai and are thus imbued with G-dly meaning, so too the seemingly mundane civil laws discussed in this week’s portion are from Sinai and possess the same spiritual and G-dly eminence.

While Everyone is Preparing for Purim Merkos Prepares for Pesach

Yesterday interviews began for potential Merkos Shluchim to Russia for Pesach. Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, Vice Chairman of Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch, who oversees this project, conducted the interviews. He took a personal interest in each group and sat for some time interviewing them.

Last year hundreds of Bochurim traveled around the world from Bulgaria to Bloivia and from Africa to Nepal in order to conduct Sedorim and spread the message of Pesach. The Bochurim are sent to small towns and villages where there is no Shliach or Rabbi and the only exposure they get to Yiddishkeit is these visits.

The Weekly Sedra – Parshas Mishpatim

The Rebbe says:

1. A big part of this week’s Torah portion discusses judgments/laws that Hashem laid down for us. One of the laws is about lending a poor person interest-free money:

The Torah says “Eem Kesef Talveh Es Ami, Es Heh’ani Ee’mach, Lo See’he’yey loy K’no’sheh, Lo S’see’moon Alav Neshech – If you will lend money to My people, to the poor person who is with you, do not act towards him as a creditor, do not place interest upon him” (Chapter 22, Verse 24).

Rabbi Gains National Reputation as Lecturer

Rabbi Sholomo Yaffe

West Hartford, CT — Jennifer Hartwell never felt the emotional connection to Judaism that so many of her Jewish friends experienced. Raised in a Reform Jewish family in which the attachment to Jewish life was more cultural than religious, she was, in her words, a “reluctant Jew.”

“I was skeptical of organized religion. I didn’t buy the endless number of “shoulds” – you should marry a Jew…you should feel something special for Israel — without meaningful explanations as to why,” says Hartwell, who moved to West Hartford from Boston three years ago with her husband and two young children.

On entering, we were greeted with a beautifully laid out hall in black and burgundy. Once we were all seated , the evening began with a welcome by Mrs Susan Jaffe, followed by the first ever performance by the Nshei Chabad ladies choir. Their rendition of chassidshe nigunim was so good they had to do an encore at the end of the evening.

Gutnick Targeted in Second Terror Plot

Australian Jewish News

Melbourne, Australia — Prominent Chabad identity Rabbi Joseph Gutnick has been named for the second time as the target of a terrorist assassination plot.

A French court last week heard that Rabbi Gutnick’s name was listed in a notebook filled with coded messages belonging to terror suspect Willie Brigitte.

The court heard that the notebook, found in Brigitte’s home in the Sydney suburb of Lakemba, also contained the names of Jemaah Islamiah spiritual leader Abu Bakar Bashir and Jack Roche, who is serving a nine-year jail sentence for conspiring to blow up the Israeli embassy in Canberra.
