Photo Essay on Crown Heights & Lubavitch wins 1st place in Pictures Of Year International competition

A photo essay by Carolyn Drake titled “The Lubavitch” has won an award in the Pictures of the Year International photojournalism competition. The essay, comprising 22 pictures from taken around Crown Heights, @ the Kinnus HaShluchim & Shluchos and the Ohel, won 1st place in the community awareness award category.

During the fall of 2003, while interning at National Geographic, Miss Drake spent about 6 weeks in Crown Heights. She then returned several times in early 2004 for a few days at a time.

The essay was printed in the June 2004 edition of Blueeyes Magazine a magazine-style website for photography ran her essay on their site.

When contacted for this story by SNS, Drake responded “I was very excited to hear I won the award and am very grateful to all the people in the Lubavitch community who welcomed me into their lives and enabled the project to happen. I would love to hear from anyone who has suggestions about other Lubavitch activities that ought to be photographed as I expand the project to other areas.”

Cleaning 770 for pesach

Chabadnik.com

Yesterday the maintenance staff of 770 in Crown Heights started cleaning the Shul for Pesach, moving all the benches and tables outside and going through every crack to make sure there is no Chometz.

Get ready for that time of year again when we get barred from the Shul and we all have to Daven outside and upstairs, hopefully we will at least have warm weather.

Yankel [Rosenbaum] Kin Target Hospital

Fourteen tumultuous years have done little to heal the hurt of Fay Rosenbaum, whose son Yankel was stabbed to death in a 1991 race riot that came to symbolize a dark and angry period in the city’s history.

Rosenbaum’s family, including the 71-year-old matriarch, is back in the city from Australia, once again seeking justice in the Hasidic scholar’s death. This time, they want to show that Yankel Rosenbaum got shoddy treatment from city doctors after Lemrick Nelson left him dying on a Crown Heights street.

“I don’t forgive and I don’t forget,” Fay, 71, told the Daily News in an exclusive interview Wednesday, just before the Brooklyn Supreme Court judge hearing the family’s civil case against the city issued a gag order.

the most famous stone torched again

At 2:00 AM on Monday a Bochur decided to cause some trouble and went outside 788-770 to the corner stone with a blowtorch and burned the protective glass, the security guard asked him what he was doing and he ran.

The Police were called and arrived on scene at about 2:05am but it was too late as the bochur decided to do his exercise and run down the block, the police are dealing with the situation and because of Bochurim like the one today will be the cause of no one having access to touch the stone.
