As people everywhere usher in the first light of Chanukah, the newly elected Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel hosted Rabbi Meir Chai Benhiyoun, his wife Rivka and their two youngest children, Ruth Shaina and Levi Yitzvhak, in the mayoral chambers for a pre–Chanukah visit.

LA Mayor to Celebrate 10 Years of Chanuka @ Citywalk

In what has become a tradition for the Jewish community of Los Angeles, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will once again attend Chabad of the Valley’s Chanukah @ Citywalk celebration and concert. In addition to the Mayor, many other local and state dignitaries will take part in the celebration of 10 years of this landmark event that has become known as Southern California’s largest Chanuka celebration.

What is a Chasid, you ask? The question was asked more than a century ago; the illustrious master answered, “he is a lamternsh’chik, a lamplighter”. But you live in the here and now, and so you ask, what is a lamplighter? He was a common figure in the world before light pollution camouflaged the night. The gas lamps were prepared, fuel and wick, and come eventide the lamplighter-fellow with his long stick, carrying fire at the far end, would light each lamp as he worked his way down the street.

Senate Majority Leader Lights Menorah with Chabad

WASHINGTON, DC [CHI] — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada welcomed West Coast Chabad’s Rabbi Chaim Nochum Cunin and Rabbi Menachem Mendel Cunin for a pre-Chanukah celebration in the Lyndon B. Johnson Room of the United States Capitol. The Senator joined Chabad in a symbolic lighting of the center “Shamash” candle on the Menorah.

In honor of Yud Daled Kislev, the Shluchim Online School celebrated the Rebbe and Rebbetzin’s wedding together, from countries around the world. The students focused on the special bond created by the Rebbe and his Chassidim on this special day.

Chabad Welcomes Delegates at Big Tent for Israel

As hundreds of Israel supporters converged on Manchester’s “Big Tent for Israel,” Chabad was on hand to offer participants the opportunity to do a Mitzvah. The Chabad booth, manned by L’Chaim-Chabad Rabbis and volunteers, helped many put on Tefillin or do other Mitzvos to merit the land and people of Israel.
