French President Says Israel Is Priority

At a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the roundup of the Jews of Vel d’Hiv, France during World War Two, President François Holland spoke to the Jewish community of France by explicitly recognizing the responsibility of France in this roundup, and more generally the active complicity of the Vichy government in the implementation of the “final solution” in France during the Holocaust.

Last Friday night, some 500 Israelis celebrated Shabbat with Chabad in Sunny Beach, Burgas. With Burgas’s airport still closed, and the resort city reeling from Wednesday’s terrorist attack, Chabad expects smaller numbers at this week’s Shabbat dinner, but is determined to host Shabbat as always, said director of Chabad activities in Bulgaria, Rabbi Yosef Solomon.

57 Jewish Tombs Vandalized In Hungary

Several broken gravestones lay on the grass on July 22, 2012 in the local Jewish cemetery of Kaposvar, about 200 km south-west from Budapest as fifty-seven graves were desecrated by vandals.

Vandals have desecrated 57 tombs containing the remains of around 250 people at a Jewish cemetery in Hungary, Jewish groups said Monday.

The Torah states, “Guard yourself and guard your soul very much (Deut. 4:9)” and “You shall guard yourselves very well (Deut. 4:15).” The Sages explain that these verses refer to the mitzvah of protecting one’s physical health.
