BOROUGH PARK, Brooklyn — It’s a fill-up with a schmear.

A gas station in one of Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish communities is offering up more than just candy and soda — it’s also peddling hearty stews, bagels with lox, challah and homemade gefilte fish for commuters hankering for an old-country nosh.

“People fill up on gas and fill up on food at the same time,” said Sam Kay, 50, as he munched on goodies at Rio gas station in Borough Park. “It’s good, Jewish and tasty.”

NY Times – Hard Times Give New Life to Prague’s Golem

By Dan Bilefsky for the New York Times

In signs of the current vogue for the Golem, a souvenir shop in Prague sells statuettes.

PRAGUE — They say the Golem, a Jewish giant with glowing eyes and supernatural powers, is lurking once again in the attic of the Old-New Synagogue here.

The Golem, according to Czech legend, was fashioned from clay and brought to life by a rabbi to protect Prague’s 16th-century ghetto from persecution, and is said to be called forth in times of crisis. True to form, he is once again experiencing a revival and, in this commercial age, has spawned a one-monster industry.

A Sicha from the Rebbe – Lag BaOmer

The Rebbe says:

1. We find many explanations as to why we are supposed to have special happiness on Lag B’Omer. Here are two of the reasons:

1) The students of Rebbi Akiva, who began dying on the second day of Pesach (Passover), stopped dying on Lag B’Omer.
