Amid Beijing’s Boom, a Jewish Community Blooms

Dan Levin – Forward

BEIJING, China — The Chabad House here sits at the end of a quiet street in an upscale gated community just inside this city’s Fourth Ring road and down the block from the Israeli Embassy. A caged duck and a stroller guard the entrance, as does a small army of young Chinese men who patrol the neighborhood of gaudy McMansions.

Itche Kadoozy Show Launches the Parsha Challenge

BROOKLYN, NY [CHI] — What can a disgruntled seventh grade teacher learn from Moses? What do stickers have to do with the Israelites? How do you get a puppet to draw pictures? Ever asked these questions? You will after you play the Parshah Challenge. So put on your thinking-kippa and get your finger on the buzzer for the Ultimate game of Jewish Knowledge/Puppet antics.

The Weekly Sedra – Parshas Masei

The Rebbe says:

1. This week’s Torah portion discusses how the Land of Israel should be divided up between all the Twelve Tribes,.

2. The Rebbe now asks the first of two questions regarding this:

We find two contradictory instructions regarding the division of the Land of Israel. On one hand the Torah tells us that the land shall be split up logically, as the verse states, “To the many you shall increase its inheritance and to the few shall you decrease its inheritance”. However on the other hand we find that the Torah tells us to split the land according to a lottery which is above logic and reason, as the verse states, “This is the land which you shall divide by inheritance as a lottery”.

Chabad at the Shore Gets Itself a New Home

The new site of Chabad at the Shore in Ventnor, NJ, with Rabbi Rapoport inset.

VENTOR CITY, NJ — Just two years after Chabad Lubavitch of Atlantic County opened a synagogue in the heart of Ventnor City’s business district — in a small storefront above an ice-cream shop — the shul known as Chabad at the Shore has moved to a larger location, one that its rabbi hopes will serve as a permanent home.

Merkos Shlichus in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, CA [CHI] — Going door to door can get old fast. A list of Riverside residents with Jewish sounding names is probably not the most ideal way to find a Jew in need. It does work though. After putting a route together on the computer we went to visit the Bergs, Khans, Steins and the likes hoping to find someone Jewish and at home. Our knocking paid off this afternoon. We came to a house and knocked on the door. This is where the pitch is. “Hi, my name is…… and we are….. and …… would you like to do a Mitzvah?!!” Hesitantly Mr. Loeb opens the door and asks “what kind of Mitzvah can I do?” “Well, Tefillin is a great choice, it’s quick, easy, and I can guide you through it.” “Tefillin, wow I haven’t seen those since I was Bar-Mitzvahed 45 years ago in Anaheim.” So we helped him with the Tefillin and Brochos, but the Shema was a breeze as he remembered his father saying it, it brought tears to his eyes. “I’ll never forget these words as long as I live,” he said.

Far From Sderot, Just Kids Again

For more than 100 youngsters, a summer camp idyll with bug juice instead of bombs.

MANALAPAN, NJ — An act as simple as riding a bicycle barefoot around a covered pavilion, the sun beating down on the grassy fields surrounding her, is something Lior Azaran could not have dreamed of doing this summer back home in Sderot.
