First It Was a Brighter Kingston and Now Its Albany Too

A much brighter Albany Ave.

Back in 1995 Sholom Ber Goldstein contacted the Department of Transportation [DOT] and asked them if it was possible to upgrade the street lamps on Kingston Avenue with brighter light bulbs, at first they didn’t want to hear anything about it but after some work and persistent phone calls the DOT finally agreed but at a cost of the added electric bill of $32 per light pole per year and the maintenance fee.

The standard light fixtures installed by the DOT are built to maintain a 150 watt bulb which is normally installed as well was now upgraded thanks to efforts on R. Sholom Ber’s behalf to fixtures that can contain the new 400 watt bulbs.

English Takes a Back Seat in Morristown – South Americans Get a Month-Long Taste of Yeshiva

Chabad.edu

At first glance, there was no telling which of the students in the study hall of the Rabbinical College of America in Morristown, N.J. were newcomers. All the men in the room sat in pairs, known as chavrusas, deep in their studies, reading from religious texts. For Jews, there is no language barrier; everyone understands, or does their best to comprehend, the Hebrew language.

Oak Park, CA — Fishing line recently installed above streets in Agoura Hills, Oak Park and part of Westlake Village is intended to enhance the Sabbath for local Orthodox Jews.

But some other residents are unhappy with the nylon filament that crisscrosses about three square miles of the community.

Private school for Jewish girls planned in Tamarac

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Tamarac, FL — The first high school in this city is scheduled to open later this year — a private, orthodox Jewish school for girls.

The local Chabad Lubavitch community has agreed to pay $4 million for an old, three-story bank building on 8100 N. University Drive, south of Northwest 82nd Street. Classes are set to begin in the fall, pending a city permit for remodeling.

Many of the students are expected to come from Coral Springs, home to one of the largest Chabad Lubavitch communities in Broward County. Chabad Lubavitch is an ultra-orthodox, Hasidic branch of Judaism that has several synagogues in the county, including ones in Coconut Creek, Plantation and Weston, two in Fort Lauderdale and three in Hollywood.

A Soul in Crown Heights – A Student Challenges Himself by Exploring His Roots

Jacob Tarica-Lechter – Chabad.edu

According to Jewish thought, life is a spiritual journey that leads individuals through moments of pleasure and pain, inspiration and struggle, enlightenment and confusion in order to build a better relationship with Hashem. A Jew should never feel comfortable with his current position in the physical and spiritual worlds, but instead must constantly evaluate his actions and philosophies to better align with what G-d desires of him.

Rabbi Stands Strong on Beliefs – ‘Deceptive’ Practices Outlined

The Coloradoan
Rabbi Yerachmiel Gorelik introduces Rabbi
Bentzion Kravitz, director of Jews for Judaism,
during a lecture Thursday at Lory Student
Center at Colorado State University. Jews for
Judaism is a counter-missionary group which
counters groups that target Jews for conversion.
Kravitz, rear, spoke to the audience about the
Messianic Christian movement and also how
Jews can respond to missionary Christians.

Ft. Collins, CO — A lecture Thursday at Lory Student Center drew a crowd of curious students and community members interested in learning about Christian missionary efforts to convert Jews.

Rabbi Bentzion Kravitz, author of the “The Jewish Response to Missionaries” and founder of Jews for Judaism, was invited by the Chabad Jewish Student Alliance to speak at the university. Jews for Judaism, which plays on the name of a Christian missionary organization Jews for Jesus, is a counter-missionary group focused on Christian efforts to target Jews for conversion.

Kravitz outlined what he considers to be deceptive tactics of Messianic Christian organizations such as Jews for Jesus and Chosen People Ministries, who claim Jews can believe in Jesus as the Messiah and remain Jewish.

He said Jews are concerned about Christians who misquote Jewish texts or adopt Jewish objects such as wearing yarmulkes, or skull caps, and talleisim, or prayer shawls.

Shliach Targeted by White Supremacist Group

The Coloradoan

Ft. Collins, CO — Some residents are upset by a white supremacist recruitment flier that was delivered last month in an east Fort Collins neighborhood.

The recruitment flier, produced by the Nationalist Coalition, named Rabbi Yerachmiel Gorelik of the Chabad Jewish Center of Northern Colorado and was distributed Dec. 19 in the Parkwood East neighborhood.

One question on the flier asked whether Gorelik should be allowed to display the menorah in Old Town.

“It was in my driveway,” Parkwood East resident Ralph Smith said. “I thought it was a little newspaper.”
