Joshua Runyan – Chabad.edu

Students at Arizona State University and the University of Maryland woke to tragic news Monday morning: Two of their own had been gunned down in what Tempe, Ariz. police are calling a murder-suicide.

According to reports, ASU sophomore Carol Kestenbaum, 20, and her good friend Nicole Schiffman, a 20-year-old sophomore at Maryland, were killed by Tempe resident Joshua Mendel, 22, after returning from a birthday party for Kestenbaum early yesterday morning. Schiffman, who grew up with Kestenbaum in Bellmore, N.Y., had flown in for the occasion.

His time to talk Torah – Radio show hits multiple issues

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Sometimes the words are for personal growth, other times just for information, or maybe inspiration. But every time, The Best of You radio show infuses talk radio with a Torah twist.

Rabbi Chay Amar, spiritual leader of Chabad of Golden Beach in Miami-Dade, hosts the radio program Monday through Friday from 4 to 5 p.m. on WLVJ (1040-AM). It features Israeli music and lots of talk.

The theme of the program, which began in November, is to “discover your inner spiritual potential.”

“We go into the depths of the secrets of the Torah or reveal our inner potential,” the Orthodox rabbi says. “The Best of You is to discover the best of themselves, which is basically the infinite power of the soul inside every one of us.”

Leaders Try To Revive Judaism

Queens Chronicle

Howard Beach, NY — Rabbi Tzvi Berkowitz, the director of Howard Beach’s Rockwood Park Jewish Center, rocked to the cadence of the Exodus verses that opened last Saturday morning’s Shabbat service. At the synagogue’s lectern, he then, like hundreds of other clergy people conducting weekend services throughout the borough, referenced scripture in his exaltation of virtues such as tolerance, charity and honesty. And though the 25 worshippers present listened with rapt attention, Berkowitz — like these other clergy people — still found himself addressing a congregation significantly smaller than those his predecessors did.
