Rabbi Demonstrates Ancient Skill of Torah Making

Harriet P. Gross – The Dallas Morning News

DALLAS, TX — A turkey feather. The tendons and tail hairs of cows. These are the basic tools of Faitel Lewin’s trade.

Rabbi Lewin is a sofer, a modern-day practitioner of an ancient and essential Jewish craft: scribing Torahs. With his turkey quill pen, he writes the full text of the Bible’s first five books, Genesis through Deuteronomy, in Hebrew on sheets of parchment prepared from animal skins. Then he wraps and stitches them into a pliable scroll with his bovine threads.

Editor's Note: Chabad-Lubavitch of Fairfield County in Stamford, Conn., co-directed by Rabbi Yisrael and Vivi Deren, honored the author with its annual Lamplighter Award. A former board member of investment firm Neuberger Berman and a past president of the United Jewish Federation of Greater Stamford, Ed Spilka was hailed by the rabbi as a “true profile in courage [and] a model of what leadership truly is.” This article is based on the author's acceptance speech.

We met the Derens about eight years ago when our son Nathaniel attended the Chabad Gan Yeladim preschool. It was the start of a wonderful friendship and journey.

The founder of NYPD Rant - an Internet forum for disgruntled cops - has agreed to change the name of his controversial Web site in exchange for his police pension, the Daily News has learned.

Ex-cop Edward Polstein has surrendered to the city's demand that he drop “NYPD” from the title, but he's already planning a new site where disgruntled cops - hiding in anonymity - can spew racist rants and hate-filled attacks on the public, their superiors and other targets.

The settlement would mark the end of Polstein's bitter federal lawsuit charging that he was fired in retaliation for criticizing Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly on the Web site.
