Saskatchewan, Canada — When Shmuli Raitman and Yisrael Kugel found out they were being sent to Saskatchewan for the summer, they didn’t have any idea what to expect.

“I had to figure out how to spell it in order to Google it to find out what it was,” said Kugel, who hails from Manhattan.

The Weekly Sedra – Parshas Balak

The Rebbe says:

1. In this week’s Torah portion a non-Jewish king named Balak asks Balaam (a non-Jewish man who was able to converse with Hashem and had special gifts) to curse the Jewish people. In the end Balaam was not able to curse the Jewish people, and only Blessings came out of his mouth.

2. One of the Blessings to the Jewish people which came out of Balaam’s mouth was; “For from its origin, I see it rock like, and from hills do I view it. Behold! It is a nation that will dwell in solitude and not be reckoned among the nations” (see Chapter 23, Verse 9).

The Projected Chabad House

Canarsie, Brooklyn — Under a blanket of darkness, Community Board 18 last week unanimously rejected a plan that seeks to bring a synagogue to a residential block in Mill Island.

Moments before the board was to take its vote, as if by divine intervention, all the lights in the Kings Plaza Community Room went out, providing a strange end to the board’s 2006-7 session.
