New Jersey Jewish News

Rabbi Shmaya Galperin, with his wife,
Rochi, is the director of the new Chabad
Jewish Center for Brookdale Community
College students.
HOLMDEL, NJ — In keeping with the Chabad movement’s mission — “to create and increase awareness of Jewish heritage and culture, and to pursue wisdom, understanding, and knowledge” — the Chabad-Lubavitch of Western Monmouth County has established an outreach center for students attending Brookdale Community College.

The new Chabad Jewish Center, which opened in early October, is located in the Holmdel residence of Rabbi Shmaya Galperin, the program director. The center also will schedule activities at locations on BCC’s Lincroft campus on an as-needed basis, Galperin said, adding that a celebration planned for the campus in November will mark the official opening of the center.

The Love That Shines Through

The New York Times

BAR MITZVAH BOY Jarrett Rattner, held by his father, right, clapping along on his big day.

CHAPPAQUA, NY — In the beginning, Brian and Jaclyn Rattner were focused on what their oldest child, Jarrett, could not do.

He could not talk, could not walk, did not play with toys, did not take to toilet training, missed most developmental milestones. Hoping for a diagnosis and cure, they took him to research centers at Harvard and Yale. Thinking it might be some rare genetic disorder like Tay-Sachs, which disproportionately affects Ashkenazi Jews, they had his blood shipped to Israel for analysis, and flew to England to meet with more specialists.

An American soldier makes a blessing on the Four Species in a sukkah set up with the help of the Aleph Institute at a base in the Middle East.

Stationed along the Syrian border in a remote region of Iraq, U.S. Marine officer Etan Anthony looked forward each day to those few precious minutes when he could don tefillin and pray the Shema and other parts of the morning service. It gave him a sense of security, of being protected, and affirmed his connection with fellow Jews as he stood guard in hostile territory.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

“The word “bereishis” is also an [divine] utterance” (Talmud, Rosh Hashanah 32a).

In the very beginning of chapter five of פרקי אבות we are taught that בעשרה מאמרות נברא העולם (“the world was created by the means of ten [divine] utterances”). For example, when the Torah relates “And G-d said: Let there be luminaries,” the sources of light in this world came into being; and when “G-d said: Let the earth bring forth living creatures,” at that moment all animal kinds and creatures were created.
