As war intensified in Georgia Monday, thousands of Jews in the former Soviet republic adjusted to living in a war zone. With his constituents hunkered down in their homes, the country's chief rabbi, Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Avraham Michaelashvili, announced a three-day blood drive to help the injured.

NYC Transit workers recently took buses' temperature 2,200 times, in the agency's largest such effort to date. Less than 5 percent were considered unacceptably hot — more than 78 degrees.

Verizon Reaches Deal With Labor Unions, Averts Possible Strike

NEW YORK, NY [DJ] — Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) reached an agreement on a new contract covering 65,000 workers Sunday, averting a potentially crippling strike.

The New York telecommunications provider and the Communications Workers of America union, which represents 50,000 workers, struck an agreement after negotiating intensely over the last few weeks, according to a statement from the union. The new contract extends coverage to MCI workers at Verizon Business and converts temporary jobs to permanent ones.

Why We Mourn on Tisha B’Av

The fast of Tisha b’Av, the saddest date on the Jewish calendar, is the day which saw the destruction of both Holy Temples, as well as many other tragic events throughout our nation’s tear-soaked galut (exile). A mournful mood is carefully created. We read Jeremiah’s Book of Lamentations and a lengthy collection of elegies which vividly describe all these tragedies, and throughout the day we follow many mourning practices.

PORTLAND, ME -– An ultra-Orthodox Jewish leader has been ordered by the city to stop conducting religious services in his Craigie Street home, prompting the Maine Civil Liberties Union to question whether officials are trying to quash religious freedom.

The issue is set to go before the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals on Aug. 21.
