DONETSK, Ukraine –- In eastern Ukraine, the Jewish community of Donetsk have concluded it latest seminar. Held from January 6th through 8th, this educational opportunity involved Jewish women, aged 14 and 15 years old. Sponsored and run by the Avi Chai Foundation.

The event, which was facilitated by Anna Skobeleva, a representative of the 'Avi Chai' Foundation in Minsk, was met with a strong turnout of young enthusiasts. The 'Junior' program is aimed at preparing counselors for Jewish camps, as well as leaders for the various youth initiatives organized by Jewish communities across the Former Soviet Union.

BERLIN, Germany — Rabbi Yehudah Teichtal, who directs the city's Chabad, told JTA Thursday that the Talmud Torah Or Avner will add on an elementary school building and a sports facility.

NEW YORK, NY [CHI] — A heavy snow warning remains in effect from 9:00pm this evening to 12:00pm Monday.

A mixture of rain and snow is expected to begin this evening... changing over to all snow by midnight. The snow may be heavy at times overnight into early Monday morning before tapering off around noontime. Total snow accumulations are expected to range from 5 to 8 inches.

Released Time Melava Malka

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — In preparation for Yud Shevat, NCFJE’s Released Time Program of greater New York had a Melave Malka for all their instructors and outreach workers. The gathering was meant to strengthen their Hiskashrus/connection to the Rebbe and to rededicate their efforts to teaching public school children one hour of Torah a week.

Over one hundred of the 150 Released Time instructors attended this Melave Malka, which was a great success.

Rachel knew it wouldn’t be easy explaining her husband’s prolonged absence. Since she wasn’t about to tell anyone the truth – that Jacob was serving a seven-month prison sentence – the South Florida woman simply decided to curtail her social interactions.

“I don’t want people to ask me,” she said. “No one knows, except for our parents, close family members and one lady in the community I’m close with.”

2 Officers and a Civilian Injured in Late Night Collision

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A violent collision between a police cruiser and Cadillac rocked Eastern Parkway early Friday morning. The incident took place at around 3:30am when police officers from the 77th Precinct responded to call for backup when they hydroplaned in front of 770 and were struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Judge: Storefront Synagogue Can Return

In the fall of 2005, Rabbi Shmuel Posner tried to open Chabad of Nova outreach center at 8608 Griffin Rd. at Timberlake Plaza. But Cooper City wouldn’t permit it, saying places of worship are not allowed in commercial areas.

COOPER CITY, FL — A federal judge ruled Friday that an Orthodox synagogue forced out in 2006 must be allowed to operate in Cooper City shopping areas.
