Update on the Proceedings with the Rubashkin Sentencing

photo: col.org.il

Update: 7:18pm The case was adjourned to tomorrow morning in a courthouse in Allentown, PA at 9:30. The judge was quoted saying that this was due to the “nature of the late hour.”

PHILADELPHIA, PA [CHI] — Lots of Crown Heights residents made their way to Pennsylvania District Court in order to show support of Reb Moshe and his son Sholom Rubashkin who were indicted on charges of illegal storage of hazardous waste in their Montex Textiles company, formerly located in Allentown, PA, without a permit, and one count of making a materially false statement.

A bus packed with people, in addition to many private cars left Crown Heights as early as 6:30am, and filled the small courtroom well beyond capacity leaving many in the hallways and outside the courtroom just saying Tehillim and curiously awaiting updates.

A Brooklyn Mitzvah: Converting the Hipsters

The New York Observer

The gentrifying core of Bushwick occupies only a few blocks, and for Rabbi Menachem Heller, 29, herein lies the problem.

As an emissary of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, a branch of Hasidic Judaism that emphasizes outreach to less observant Jews, Rabbi Heller wants good access to the hipster arrivistes. Unfortunately, his current spot is too far away from the few hangouts – a health food store, a coffee shop, an artists’ studio space, a bar or two – to get noticed.

Op-Ed: The Rubashkins and you

An open letter to the community. By: Hirshy Minkowicz – Alpharetta, Georgia

A moment of truth has descended on the Jewish community in which we stand to define to the world, to our children, and to our selves whether we are a people of real action or just empty words.

Whether we are able to put into practice the lofty things we learn and talk about or we simply know how to “talk the talk” but not very good at “walking the walk”

A prestigious Jewish family, known throughout the world for tremendous acts of kindness, care, and love for fellow Jews, in ways that are unparalleled, has fallen on hard times and now faces the loss of their entire company and enterprise to the banks that are foreclosing on them.

May the newborn be a source of Nachas to his parents, grandparents, relatives and Klal Yisroel.

Tomorrow Morning: Rare Opportunity for Pidyon Shevuyim

Dear Anash,

The Rubashkin family is well-known in our community for their Ahavas Yisroel and Tzedakah. Lamentably, charges against them have been complicated by the slander of a few former associates looking for revenge.

Tomorrow morning—Monday, November 3—a Pennsylvania judge will sentence R’ Moshe Rubashkin and his son.

It is not for us to act as judge and jury of our fellow Jews. What we can and must do is stand together in support of truth. In particular, it is our responsibility to show a secular judge, a skeptical legal system and a “gotcha” media that our community does not abandon its own.

Kosher Refreshment for the Marathon

The New York Times

Rabbi Zev Wineberg will be offering kosher sports drinks to runners during Sunday’s marathon.

NEW YORK, NY — When watching the New York City Marathon this Sunday, consider the plight of the kosher marathoner, who because of Jewish dietary laws may not replenish himself with sports drinks that lack kosher certification.

In Ukraine, Shocking Theft at Jewish Burial Site

PERVOMAISK, Ukraine [FJC] — An upsetting incident has occurred in the Ukrainian city of Pervomaisk, Nikolayev region. Namely, the theft of a very expensive memorial Menorah, erected in memory of tens of thousands of Jews murdered during the Holocaust, who were buried in a mass grave at this site. Tragically, the large Menorah, constructed of metal, was stolen during Simchat Torah.

Chief Rabbi of Pervomaisk Levi Perelstein and Mikhail Shefkin, the Chairman of the local Jewish community, immediately notified the police and submitted a complaint to law enforcement agencies. The police announced they would launch an investigation and try to find the culprits. Rabbi Perelstein expressed confidence that all angles are being investigated and does not rule out the possibility that the thieves stole the object to melt down the metal.

Quiet Haloween and Shabbos, Gang Initiations Scare False

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Boruch Hashem Shabbos has passed and there were no reports of violence or egg throwing incidents. Shomrim reported that there had not been any calls to the hotline, and that members escorted scores of residents to their homes on the outskirts of the neighborhood.

Also, police reported that the text messages that have been circulating about gang initiation violence against woman in Brooklyn were false. In a statement to the press police commissioner Raymond Kelly said “Halloween is the season of rumors. We know nothing specific about this threat. We’ve heard it because people were talking about what’s out there, on the Internet, but we have no specific information to indicate that there’s any validity to this rumor.”
