Judge: City Can Seize Equipment from Ahava Cheese Plant

ALBANY, NY — A state Supreme Court judge has ruled the city of Ogdensburg can acquire cheese making equipment from the financially plagued St. Lawrence Food Corporation an associate of Ahava Food Corp. and Lewis County Dairy Corp.

Judge David Demarest made the ruling in a four page decision signed Monday.

GAZA — The parents of an Israeli soldier injured Tuesday during anti-terror operations in the Gaza Strip is terming as miraculous their son’s relatively moderate injuries following a mine explosion.

Rabbi Yehuda Rubin, director of Chabad-Lubavitch of Elon More, says that his son, paratrooper Nechemia Rubin, was clearing a house outside of Gaza City as part of Israel’s 18-day-old offensive against Hamas targets, dubbed Operation Cast Lead. He was standing next to his commander when the mine went off, sending shrapnel everywhere.

State to Vote on Jewish Hebrew Public School for Brooklyn

ALBANY, NY [NY1] — The New York State Board of Regents is set to vote this week on a proposed Hebrew charter school in Brooklyn. The New York Times says the school would open in the fall if approved.

Under the proposal, the school would start with 150 kindergartners and first graders and be located in District 22 – which encompasses Midwood, Sheepshead Bay, and Mill Basin.

PARIS, France [AFP] — French politicians and religious leaders on Monday condemned a petrol bomb attack on a synagogue, the latest incident in a spate of anti-Semitic violence since the start of Israel’s Gaza offensive.

Vandals hurled nine firebombs at the Ohr Menahem community centre and synagogue in the ethnically mixed Paris suburb of Saint-Denis late Sunday, sparking a fire in the next-door kosher restaurant, local police said.

City Council Seeks Grace Period for Parking Violations

NEW YORK, NY — Several City Council members announced on Sunday that a bill had been introduced that would create a five-minute grace period before drivers are issued summonses for parking violations like expired meters and alternate-side parking rules.

The bill addresses a longstanding pet peeve among many city lawmakers, whose constituents often complain of feeling victimized by unforgiving traffic agents.

TEL AVIV, Israel — In another example of how market forces serve religious faith, El Al is in advanced negotiations with representatives of the haredi community to provide super kosher or “Mehadrin” flights.

If the deal between the sides is sealed, the flights, which would begin this Pessah season, would adhere to strict gender separation, Glatt kosher food and no secular on-flight movies.
