Chabad Visits Injured from Kassams in Netivot

NETIVOT, Israel [CHI] — In the Soroka hospital in Be’er Sheva, where the injured from Kassam attacks on Netivot are hospitalized, Rabbi Menachem Kutner from Chabad’s Terror Victim Project, together with the Shliach to Be’er Sheva, Rabbi Zalman Gorelik, visited the injured in the various departments. They lit the Menora and encouraged and uplifted their spirits, while distributing jelly doughnuts to the patients and their worried families.

The Light of Chanukah Returns to Piestany, Slovakia

PIESTANY, Slovakia [CHI] — On the last night of Chanukah, the town of Piestany, Slovakia, was roused to its first public Menorah lighting in the town square. Formerly the home to tens of thousands of Jews before 1939, Piestany is now home to Shluchim Rabbi & Mrs. Zev Stiefel & a few local Jews, as well as the thousands of Israeli, European, & even American tourists who visit this beautiful spa town every year. Over 100 people, including Jews from neighboring towns, joined the community to celebrate the holiday of freedom.

WOODMERE, NY — At first, Dan Smith wasn’t sure he wanted to bring his toddler, Judah, to another Hanukkah party.

Smith, 31, of Far Rockaway, said he, his wife, and their two children had been at Chabad’s Chanukah Wonderland party in Woodmere Thursday when a BMW sport utility vehicle crashed into the building. The SUV drove over the spot where, seconds before, Smith’s son had stood.

Flight Risk Ruling Spurs Protest

DUBUQUE, IA — It’s a court ruling that Jewish Americans from coast-to-coast immediately viewed as unconstitutional and as an erosion of their civil rights. Sunday, about 60 people, mostly from Postville, Iowa, assembled in front of the Dubuque Law Enforcement Center to light a menorah on the last night of Hanukkah to shed light on the case.

Former Agriprocessors Chief Executive Officer Sholom Rubashkin is being held in the Dubuque County Jail on federal charges of harboring illegal immigrants, document fraud, identity theft and bank fraud. Rubashkin was denied bail Dec. 22.
