Give one hour a week for 8 weeks towards completion of Meseches Megillah Perek Beis under the guidance of Rabbi Michoel Lerner. The goal is to complete the Perek on Tes Zayin Sivan, IY”H. The Shiurim will take place on Monday evenings at 9:15pm (following Maariv) at Eliyahu Nochum – Lefferts Shul (672 Lefferts Ave) begining Chof Vov Nissan. Be sure to join in!

South African Community Doubles Space for School

BLOUBERGRANT, South Africa — Just in time for the holiday of Passover, South Africa’s Chabad-Lubavitch of the West Coast celebrated the expansion of its school as well as the dedication of a new Torah scroll. The double celebration coincided with the 107th anniversary of the birth of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, a day marked by Chabad-Lubavitch across the globe as Education and Sharing Day.

The Weekly Sicha of the Rebbe – Parshas Shemini

The Rebbe says:

1. The basic outline of this week’s Torah portion is as follows:

The Torah first tells us about the eighth day of the inauguration of the Mishkan (the Tabernacle).

The Torah then continues and recounts how the two eldest sons of Aharon Hakohen (Aaron the High Priest) – Nadav and Avihu – died while bringing a “foreign fire” into the Mishkan.

Towards the end of the portion the Torah tells us the laws of forbidden animals and what constitutes a Kosher animal.

Finally, at the end of the portion the Torah tells us the laws regarding consuming forbidden reptiles and insects.

Parking Meters Changing From 30 Minutes to 20 Minutes

NEW YORK — At 47,000 meters around NYC, 30 minutes for 25 cents is being reduced to 20 minutes at the same price.

It’s part of Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to raise an additional $16.8 million annually to help close the city’s $4 billion budget gap.

Birkas HaChamah Ceremony and Event in Monroe

MONROE, NY [CHI] — Many local Orange County residents, from all walks of life, gathered on Wednesday morning, April 8th, at Chabad’s Monroe Location on Route 17m, to celebrate the rare Jewish practice of Birkat Hachamah, the blessing of the sun, performed only once every 28 years. It is recited on a specific Wednesday morning in the spring, when it is calculated that the sun returns to the same position in the sky it occupied at the time of Creation, and at the same time of the week, 5769 years ago.

Mayor Bloomberg: No Link Between Violent Crime, Economy

NEW YORK [AP] — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he doesn’t believe a bad economy leads to more violent crime.

Bloomberg said Monday in an interview that murderers “don’t read The Wall Street Journal.”
