With sadness we inform you of the passing of the beloved Gabbai of Montreal, Rabbi Meir Yechezkel Junik. He was eighty years old.
Rabbi Junik was born in the Soviet Union to a devotedly Chasidishe family. He was imprisoned in Siberia for nine long years where he suffered untold hardships due to his religious beliefs. While his family escaped from the Communists, he remained behind the Iron Curtain where he married and raised his children to the highest levels of Chasidishkeit.
While there, the Rebbe gave his brother, Rabbi Berel Junik, many Brochos and Havtochos to ensure that they would be released from Russia. He finally moved with his family to Montreal to live near his father, the prominent chosid, Rabbi Naftoli Junik.
He is survived by his wife, Sara, sisters Ettel Jurkowitz and Chana Morozow, children Chaya Tzirel Druk (Detroit, MI), Berel (Crown Heights), Shmuel (Brooklyn, NY), and Shimshon Aaron (Crown Heights), grandchildren, and great-grand children of which many are Shluchim of the Rebbe.
The Levaya will take place on Sunday and will be leaving from the Shomrei Hadas Chapel at 10:00am and will be passing 770 at approximately 10:45am.
