A participant on a summer Birthright Israel trip for people with special needs dons the Jewish prayer boxes known as tefillin at the Western Wall.

For the past three years, Birthright Israel trips conducted by the Mayanot Institute for Jewish Studies for young adults with special needs have earned a reputation for making the Holy Land all of its excitements accessible to a high-functioning population with a range of medical issues, including autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. But the most recent of the high-energy 10-day trips offered its participants something extra: a surprise engagement.

Google Earth Photos Reveal Syrian Scuds

Israeli defense experts were still sounding alarms this week over Google Earth images made public Friday by the Israeli daily Haaretz. The satellite photos, taken March 22, show Scud missiles ready for deployment at a Syrian base at Adra, where earlier reports suggest Syria is training Hezbollah militants in the use of missiles that threaten large parts of Israel.

City Employees To Use Zipcar Rental Cars

NEW YORK [NY1] — In a new attempt at cost-cutting, some city-owned vehicles are being scrapped in favor of a car-share program. Some 300 employees at the Department of Transportation will soon begin renting Zipcar vehicles by the hour for official city business.
