Today, Yud Tes Kislev “The Rosh Hashanah of Chassidism.” marks 214 years since the release of the Alter Rebbe, R. Schneur Zalman of Liadi founder of Chasidus Chabad in the year 5559 (1798). This year also marks 200 years since the Alter Rebbes Histalkus. In honor of this auspicious day, which is referred to by Chasidim as the “Holiday of Holidays”, Farbrengens are being held around the world!

What does an active, healthy synagogue look like? It can manifest itself in many ways, but at Chabad of University City, the clues are unequivocal. One Chanukah celebration is a big deal to Rabbi Nosson Meretsky — as in 9 feet tall. That’s the size of the menorah Meretsky, 39, and his wife, Sarah Meretsky, will set up at 5 p.m. Dec. 9 in front of the State College Municipal Building. As co-directors of the Rohr Chabad Jewish Student and Community Center, serving Penn State and State College, the Meretskys stage their Hanukkah display as part of the international Chabad house network’s mission of conducting outreach programs for Jewish communities and promoting Jewish culture.
Last year a Bat Mitzvah girl from Chicago asked her parents for a special gift, to sponsor a Bat Mitzvah party for needy girls somewhere in the world. Last week her wish came true in the Children’s home of Moscow.
