The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, introduced the Shofar Campaign back in 1953, when he first instructed young men to go out and share the mitzvah of shofar with every Jew they couldm, with a particular emphasis on the hospital-bound. In 1974 he expanded it to include the entire month of Elul. Rabbi Shmuel Greisman (center, holding shofar) brings the call of the shofar to Israeli soldiers in the fall of 1980.
