Outpouring of Emotion Seeks to Make Sense of Mumbai Tragedy

By Naftali Silberberg

An editor with Chabad.org goes through a log of reader comments posted in response to the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

BROOKLYN, NY — Perusing the more than 600 reflections submitted by readers to Chabad.org in the days after India’s worst terrorist attack, one thing becomes clear: In the course of their short lives, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg – the directors of the Chabad-Lubavitch center in Mumbai whose bodies and those of four other victims were recovered the night of Nov. 28 – managed to touch many lives.

Lessons for Bryansk Community

BRYANSK, Russia [FJC] — The Jewish community of Bryansk is now offering a new initiative to its members. The “Express Course on Jewish Tradition” is the name of this new program, which was just launched and will run for six weeks, allowing adult learners to quickly and effectively learn the main information about the history of the Jewish people, Jewish traditions, and Judaism.

“During the Congress of Chabad Lubavitch envoys held recently in New York, I coincidentally referred to our program in a conversation with the Chief Rabbi of Bryansk, Menachem Mendel Zaklas. He just grew alight over this concept,” commented Rabbi Dani Ashe, the Coordinator of the “Express Course on Jewish Tradition” in S. Petersburg. Rabbi Zaklas asked his S. Petersburg colleague about the details of this program. That is the story of how this special educational opportunity also came to be offered in Bryansk.

Feds Argue Every Jew is a Flight Risk

Stewart Ain – The Jewish Week

DES MOINES, IA — In a legal argument called “astounding and very troublesome,” a federal prosecutor has argued that Israel’s Law of Return makes American Jews a flight risk and therefore ineligible for bail.

The claim, believed to be unprecedented, came in the bank fraud case of Sholom Rubashkin, the former Jewish head of the embattled Iowa kosher slaughterhouse, Agriprocessors, Inc.

Behind Chabad Fundraising, A Stealth Security Campaign

Adam Dickter – The Jewish Week

NEW YORK, NY — In the weeks since the Mumbai terrorist attack, the Chabad movement has directed contributions from supporters primarily to two campaigns: One to aid the child whose emissary parents were slain, and another to rebuild the badly damaged outreach center and re-establish operations there, which could cost as much as $1 million, according to a Chabad estimate.

But at the same time, some Chabad leaders are acting on their own to secure funds and resources to make dozens of Chabad houses in far-flung outposts safer.

A group of emissaries in southeast Asia, led by Rabbi Yosef Kantor, who is based in Bangkok, Thailand, has launched a campaign aimed at improving security at their centers, and distributed donation cards at Lubavitch world headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, last week.

Father of the Jewish Internet – 10 Years to his Passing

In honor of the tenth yahrtzeit (anniversary of passing) of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak (“YY”) Kazen, of blessed memory, on the 12th of Kislev (December 9th, 2008), Chabad.org unveiled a special section to memorialize its legendary founder.

Well before most people – or any Jewish organization – knew of its use or potential, Rabbi Kazen used the fledgling internet to reach Jews throughout the world. Many were profoundly touched by YYK in those early years when he pioneered Chabad In Cyberspace – later to become Chabad.org – when he rightfully earned the title: “Father of the Jewish Internet.”

In Terror, Satmar and Chabad Rabbis United

Marissa Brostoff – Forward

MOURNING: In Jerusalem, rabbis carry the coffin of Satmar
scion Aryeh Leibish Teitelbaum, slain in the terrorist attacks
in Mumbai.

While most of the media attention in the wake of the attack on the Chabad-run Nariman House in Mumbai has focused on slain Lubavitch emissaries Gavriel and Rachel Holtzberg, less noted was the death of a third Hasidic Jew in the assault, Aryeh Leibish Teitelbaum, a member of the Satmar sect. What makes Teitelbaum’s death particularly striking is that, though he and the Holtzbergs all came from Brooklyn, only in a city like Mumbai would they have eaten and prayed together in the same house.

In places like Brooklyn and Jerusalem, where the ultra-Orthodox population is large and diverse, members of the Chabad and Satmar communities — two of the largest and most prominent ultra-Orthodox groups — have kept their distance and at times have even fought openly.
