SYDNEY, Australia [CHI] — Gimmel Tammuz is always a tense and perplexing time for anyone, especially those so far away from the Rebbe’s Daled Amos, out of the Crown Heights Region. One thing is for sure, it is a time when Chassidim make a point of coming together, thinking about the Rebbe and the Rebbe’s ongoing leadership which can be felt worldwide, which although unexplainable is undeniably real.

QUEENS, NY [CHI] — Midday Gimmel Tamuz, thousands have already passed the Tzion, and the lines are only getting longer, all three large ‘tents’ are packed with no room to move, Minyanim for Shacharis and Mincha go on throughout the day, Shluchim and Bochurim sitting and learning, the spontaneous Farbrengens and the occasional Niggun breaks out from random tables, and the hundreds just sitting and writing their Pan’s.

QUEENS, NY [CHI] — 12:00pm and thousands are lined up waiting their turn to enter the Ohel on this auspicious day of Gimmel Tammuz. Suddenly there is a halt, the movement is suspended for a short while to make room for members of Agudas Chasidei Chabad headed by Rabbi Avrohom Shemtov to enter and read the General Pan.
Rabbi Shemtov reads the Pan in an emotional tone that is heard by everyone at the Ohel via the loudspeakers. A hush silence prevails as everyone stops what they’re doing and chatting to listen to the reading of the Pan.

On the way.
Niggunim are playing.
The vintage tape is unclear, but the Rebbe’s voice is strong. Relevant. Urgent.
Out my window, Jewish faces zoom by.
We have begun the march.
We’re on our way.
There’s a lot of traffic for 10 pm.
“Are they going to the Ohel?”
The following is a photo of the Rebbe at a Farbrengen speaking with the people involved in starting the ‘Chanoch Lanaar’ school.
(L-R) Rabbi Groner, Rabbi Goldshmidt (Kfar Chabad), Rabbi Yankel Bryski and Mr. Nochum Preger A”H from Crown Heights, in the picture they were giving the Rebbe keys to the school and the photo was taken by Shmidy.

Perhaps its the most ‘quite’ time at the Ohel throughout Gimmel Tamuz, the slow stream of people trickling in to the Ohel.
