LANCASTER, PA — President’s Day Weekend is off time for most high school students, but in York, PA, a group of sixteen Ramaz students got down and dirty, hacking away as they volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, and then, spontaneously, for Chabad of Lancaster.

Chabad Lubavitch Comes to City

Peter Guinta – St Augustine

S AUGUSTINE, FL — The worldwide Chabad Lubavitch movement has organized a new center in St. Augustine to hold classes to enhance Jewish life and traditions.

A Chabad Center functions much like a Jewish community center, and the word itself is a Hebrew accroymn meaning “wisdom, understanding and knowledge.”

Rabbi Levi Vogel, who recently moved from Brooklyn, N.Y., said he came to St. Augustine not to compete with existing Jewish congregations but to do everything possible to strengthen Jewish identity.

Fifth Annual Kinus Talmidim-Hashluchim in Detroit

Last Year Annual Kinus Talmidim-Hashluchim in Florida

DETROIT, MI [CHI] — As in previous years, the Vaad-Talmidei-Hatmimim announced the regional conventions for Talmidim-Hashluchim, serving in yeshivas around the world.

Talmidim-Hashluchim are an integral part of Yeshivos today, they serve as role models and mentors to younger Bochurim and are influential in setting the prevailing tone and atmosphere in their respective Yeshiva. The Kinus infuses them with a sense of mission and responsibility so they positively impact their younger peers.

A Purim Katan Sicha

The Rebbe says:

1. The Ba’al Haturim (the code of Jewish law written by Rabbi Yakov ben Asher) and the Shulchan Aruch (the code of Jewish law composed by Rabbi Yosef Karo) both end off the section of “Orach Chayim – The way of life” with the Halachos (laws) of Purim Katan.

2. We could explain simply that the code of Jewish law ends off with the Halochos of Purim Katan because it is written in accordance with the yearly cycle; first the Halochos of Rosh Chodesh (sanctifying the New Moon), then the Halochos of Pesach (Passover)….then the Halochos of Succos (Succot), Chanukah (Hanukah), and finally, Purim. In other words, beginning from Rosh Chodesh Nissan (the New Month of Nissan), which is actually the first Mitzvah (commandment) that the Jewish people were given, Purim is the end of the year.

RUNNING SPRINGS, CA — This weekend, hundreds of Chabad emissaries serving communities across California and Nevada gathered at the Kiryas Schneerson mountaintop campus for the 2008 West Coast Chabad convention. Participants in the annual convention — or Kinus — engaged in interactive workshops, saw the launch of several initiatives that will expand Chabad’s outreach, and enjoyed a stirring keynote address by best-selling author Michael Gerber.
