LOS ANGELES, CA — At Hofstra University’s Student Union, Mendel Lieberman is a familiar face. Sorority sisters expect him to be at the table next to theirs. Students stop to beam at him on their way to the ATM. During Shabbat dinner, he always greets them by name – even if the guest list tops twenty. Typical of Chabad on campus, yes, but Mendel is only two.

URBANA, IL — As a freshman, Melisa Garber went looking for Jewish activities on campus. The Dartmouth College women and gender studies major, now a senior, ended up at Shabbat dinners with other students in an atmosphere, she said, not all that different from the youth functions she attended as a high school student in Miami.

“It was so superficial, very socially-oriented,” she explained. “It was very much about who you went to dinner with.”

New Book Aims to Get Families Ready for Fast-Approaching High Holidays

BROOKLYN, NY — A new book published this month aims to educate children and their parents about the High Holidays. Released by the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Shluchim Office, which provides resources to Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries, High Holidays for Children contains illustrations, explanative text and a “Words to Know” feature that highlights key concepts and vocabulary words.

Huge Publicity For Chabad of Scotland

GIFFNOCK, Scotland [CHI] — This week Lubavitch of Scotland has been using a 20 foot long ad banner to publicise their programmes within the Glasgow Jewish community. The banner was sponsored by the Sholom and Pessy Jacobs Family Foundation. Sholom who resides with his wife and familyin Cedarhurst New York is the son of Rabbi and Mrs Chaim Jacobs who have been Lubavitch-Chabad Shluchim in Scotland for 38 years.
