Gimmel Tammuz 5767

Excerpted from Rabbi Yossy Gordon’s weekly Torah Thought email

Tonight is Gimmel Tammuz, marking thirteen years since the passing of the Rebbe in 1994.

Two weeks after the Previous Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn (1880-1950) passed away, my grandfather Reb Yochanan Gordon was in the synagogue at 770 Eastern Parkway, which houses Lubavitch World Headquarters. This was yet before the Rebbe had openly accepted the mantle of leadership. It was a mere two weeks after the Previous Rebbe’s passing!

My Bubbe Zeesy had been seriously ill and the doctors didn’t give her situation much hope. The Rebbe had already heard that she was sick when he met my zayde. “Reb Yochanon, I heard that your wife is not feeling well.” Zayde confirmed his suspicion. Then the Rebbe said, “Why don’t you ask my father-in-law what to do?” Zayde said he had gone to the Previous Rebbe’s resting place but did not know where to turn for guidance. The Rebbe told him, “Ask, ask. My father-in-law will surely find a way to answer you.”

Respect the Shul!

Since Shavuos, Anash communities across the world have been exposed to a new educational brochure. A group of concerned Chassidim has seen the need to raise the level of Lubavitch community awareness of proper conduct during Davening and have published a new color brochure and had it circulated amongst Lubavitch communities worldwide.

The brochure titled “ומקדשי תיראו” (“You shall revere my Sanctuary”) addresses basic yet fundamental Hanhagos and Halachos concerning proper conduct in Shul. Aimed at a Lubavitch audience, the brochure describes the vital need for proper decorum in Shul during prayer, citing brief but pointed statements from Gemara, Shulchan Aruch, and the often passionate words of the Rebbes of Lubavitch.

Cambria Heights, NY — In the later years of his life, the Lubavitcher Rebbe made frequent visits to the resting place of his predecessor at the Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens. After the passing of his wife in 1987, with whom he lived on President Street in Crown Heights, these twice or thrice weekly excursions to Cambria Heights were almost the only reason he would leave his office at 770 Eastern Parkway.

Michael Bagraim, National Chairman of the SAJBOD contrasted the current challenge our community faces through the anti-Israel bias we feel from Government with the ever-positive attitude that the Rebbe inspired his followers to bring to South Africa starting from the 1970’s until today. He concluded by sharing his personal story when his own decision not to emigrate was influenced by the arrival of the Chabad Lubavitch Shluchim during that period.
