Tomorrow – Taanit Esther – the Fast of Esther

Chabad.org

Because Adar 13 (the day before Purim) falls on a Shabbos this year, the “Fast of Esther,” usually observed on that date, is moved back to Thursday, the 11th of Adar, March 1st.

Fast Begins: 5:09 AM
Fast Ends: 6:26 PM

The fast — which is observed on Adar 11 by all adults (i.e., over bar or bat mitzvah age) — is in commemoration of the three-day fast called at Esther’s behest before she risked her life to appear unsummoned before King Achashveirosh to save the Jewish people from Haman’s evil decree (as related in the Book of Esther, chapter 4). The fast also commemorates Esther’s fasting on the 13th of Adar, as the Jews fought their enemies (see “Today in Jewish History” for Adar 13). No food or drink is partaken of from daybreak to nightfall. Pregnant, nursing women or people in ill health are exempted from fasting.

Moscow Matzo Factory Produces 175 Tons of Matzo

FJC News

Moscow, Russia — For only the second year, matzo is being produced at the new matzo factory in Moscow, letting Russian Jews celebrate Passover, the holiday of freedom, in accordance with national traditions. Already this year, the factory has produced more than 175 tons of matzo, which will appear at Pesach seders throughout Russian regions and sold at prices affordable to most. Members of the Kashrut Department of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia insure proper production.

During Soviet times, Moscow’s Jews hand made matzo in underground conditions and, since the 90s, the Israeli-imported matzo was subject to high tariffs and transportation costs. Nowadays, the new plant houses some of the most modern technology for making kosher matzo, largely from continuing efforts of Russia’s chief rabbi Berel Lazar, the Ohr Avner Chabad and funding from FJC president Lev Leviev.

Longmont, CO — When Shayna Borenstein was little, she’d dress up like a boy and her brother dressed like a girl, and they would delight in confusing their grandmother.

Earlier in the week, her mother would make dough for Hamantaschen, the traditional cookie for the Jewish holiday of Purim, and Borenstein and several of her seven sisters would pinch the dough into the cookie’s traditional triangular shape.

The dressing up and baking was for Purim, a joyous Jewish holiday where Jews, especially children, dress up in costumes or wear masks, and everyone gives baskets of food to friends and food or money to the poor. In general, it’s a time to get together and celebrate with a feast, and even to drink alcohol and party.

Lubavitch HQ, NY — When Christopher Guest entitled the mock movie, at the heart of his new film, “Home for Purim,” he generated six million dollars’ worth of publicity for the relatively unknown Jewish holiday that is celebrated March 3-4. Chabad centers have found creative ways to spread Purim joy to Jewish people around the world.

Thus Shall be done… in Gan Temimim!

Bands, Bars and Buffets Its Purim 2007!

Jennifer Anne Perez – Chabad.edu

Los Angeles, CA — If there’s one thing Chabad campus groups across the country will pull out all the stops for this year, it’s Purim. The themes and careful preparation for by far one of the most beloved of celebrations among students could be summed up in three simple words: Do something different.

At the University of Southern California, over the years students have watched their small Purim party evolve into a massive event welcoming more than a thousand people. This year, with on the hour readings of the Megillah, a giant Wild West extravaganza with hourly duels, and a pre-Purim carnival complete with rides and a “Pin the Yarmulke on the Rabbi” game, the university’s Chabad House will no doubt top all previous celebrations.

Pass the Cookies for Purim

Saratoga Springs on Monday.

Saratoga Springs, NY — You’ve got to like a holiday that’s symbolized by a cookie.

Rabbi Abba Rubin of Saratoga Chabad uses his car as a mobile billboard for Jewish culture, attaching cutout symbols of the holidays to the roof. While most people with a passing knowledge of Judaism recognize that the menorah symbolizes Hanukkah, the triangle currently sticking up from his burgundy sedan like a shark fin might be a little less recognizable.
