73 Year Old Woman BEATEN and MUGGED

This morning at around 11:00am an elderly woman was walking on Carroll St. between Albany and Troy when she was accosted by one Black man, who kicked and knocked her over after which a second Black man came running from across the street, and according to eye witnesses he struck the woman then the two took the woman purse and fled up Albany Ave. towards Eastern Pkwy.

Shomrim and Hatzalah were called and responded, a canvass by Shomrim didn’t yield any positive results. Hatzalah treated the woman for a wound she sustained to her head which was bleeding, then transported her to a local physician. Police responded in large numbers as well.

The Weekly Sedra – Nitzavim-Vayelech

This Shabbat is a preparation for Rosh HaShanna.

Nitzavim –Vayelech means ‘Standing firm and Moving” which is very symbolic of Rosh HaShanna when we are all standing firmly before G-d; certain that He our king and our father and will bless us with a good new year, and also moving spiritually upward and forward into more genuine levels of service.

But we see something strange here. In this week’s portion G-d promises that the Jews will become idolaters!

He says to Moses (31:15) Behold….this people will stray after the gods of the land….and they will leave me and transgress my covenant. And Moses (31:29) repeats it, ‘I know that after my death your will surely sin and turn from the path etc’ . In fact, this is the reason he writes the coming Torah section called HaAzinu; to stem the idolatry.

With putty in his ears to protect them from the roaring report of mortar fire, Morton Friedman of Wilmette, IL, supported Israel during the war from the frontlines.

When the war started, Friedman, a former Chief of the Criminal Division of the Cook County State Attorney’s Office, called Rabbi Dovid Flinkenstein at Chai Center-Chabad of Wilmette. He wanted to volunteer in Israel, and not just volunteer somewhere in Israel, which would have been enough, but in the north. “I had trouble conceptualizing why a Diaspora Jew’s blood is more worthy of protection than an Israeli Jew’s,” said Friedman.
