The heart of the average person desperately seeks that which is beyond the mundane. Animals do not have these cravings. When an animal fulfills its biological function or drive, it stops. Why is addiction unique to human beings? Addiction is born out of human discontent, and ultimately due to a lack of spirituality. The individual attempts to fill a spiritual void with physical objects or pleasures. These give very temporary relief, but never satisfy the deeper spiritual craving. Rabbi Pinchas Taylor reminds us that the addiction itself is not the addict’s problem, it’s his attempted solution. The only true solution is to treat the spiritual void.

This short video begs a question that each of us should consider asking ourselves from time to time. How do I see myself? Am I simply hammering nails in boards—tasks devoid of meaning and purpose, just getting through each day and killing time? Or are my actions purpose driven? Do they have a higher purpose that ties them all together? Am I building toward achieving some greater goal? Rabbi Pinchas Taylor adds that when we can reflect on why we do all of things that we do, and crystallize the purpose in it all, this also enhances our motivation in performance.
