Serbian President Calls for Tolerance as Menorah Lit

Serbian President Boris Tadić joined the ceremonial lighting of the Chanukah candles at the Sukkat Shalom Belgrade Synagogue last night. President Tadić used the opportunity to spread a message that the Jewish festival reminds us of the importance to show respect and tolerance towards people of all backgrounds.

Chanukah Lights Up Brisbane

Chanukah lit up Brisbane, Australia’s CBD as the Jewish community joined with friends and visitors to celebrate the first night of the eight day festival with the lighting of a six metre tall menorah in Reddacliff Place, Queen Street Mall on the evening of Tuesday 20 December.

Hebrew School Sends Chanukah Package to Soldier

Celebrating the holidays are always more joyous when celebrated with family. For the Joyce family of Highland Falls, NY this won’t be possible this year as their dad, Michael, is a US soldier in Afghanistan helping to fight the war on terror.

Mayor Lights Menorah at ‘Occupy Lincolnwood’

Over 200 people gathered Wednesday night adjacent to the Lincolnwood, IL Village Hall to celebrate Chanukah. The event was titled “Occupy Lincolnwood – with the light of Chanukah.” Channel 5 and Channel 7 were thinking it was a real Occupy event. Needless to say they were quite disappointed that they were duped, it was a village-wide Chanukah party.

A few dozen people gathered Tuesday night at the beginning of Chanukah to watch a block of ice be transformed into a giant Menorah in Mamaroneck, NY by sculptor Mark McKenzie. Village Mayor Norm Rosenblum later lit the candles at Chabad-Lubavitch of Mamaroneck.

Chanukah on Ice NYC made history on Tuesday night, December 20, with over 1,300 Jewish people taking to the ice in Trump Wollman Rink in Central Park in what has been described as the “Biggest Chanukah Party in New York City”.

Shliach Lights Menorah with Colorado Governor

Colorado’s governor John Hickenlooper, Denver’s mayor Michael B. Hancock and the Federation’s CEO were among the 300 people attending the Grand Menorah Lighting in Denver with Rabbi Yisroel Engel on the first night of Chanuka. A children’s choir sang Chanukah songs and a number of community leaders and dignitaries – including the governor and mayor spoke at the event.

Photographer Shmulik Sofer spotted a very curious object outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s residence in Jerusalem: what appears to be a replica of the Rebbe’s 770 Menorah. Although the Rebbe’s Menorah was intended to be a replica of the one in the Beis Hamikdosh, the same cannot be said about this one because the official position of the Israeli government is that the Beis Hamikdosh’s Menorah was round. Can anyone explain this?
