From Days Gone By: Tomchei Temimim in Japan

Students of the Lubavitcher Yeshiva in Otwock, fleeing the Nazis after the invasion of Poland in WWII, arrive in Kobe, Japan. They would later make their way to Shanghai, China and remain there for the duration of the war.

Can you identify those in the photo?

The picture is in Shanghai already. If you look closely you can see Chinese writing on the buildings.

It’s actually not that hard to tell them apart, but the picture is blurry, and there isn’t much writing in it. Based on the little I can see I think it’s more likely to be Chinese than Japanese, but I’m not at all sure of it.

  • Interesting

I found this pix in a book about the Mir Yeshiva called “The Shanghai connection”. Under the pix, it just describes the Rabbis as bochurim arriving in Kobe, Japan.

  • Not rabbi bukiet

just for the record that is not Rabbi Bukiet and the picture is in Japan.

My grandmother had cousins that escaped Poland and went to Japan from the Mir Yeshiva. Are these the students?
