Video: Namesake of Bochur’s Mesiras Nefesh Speaks

On a hot June day in 1977, Avrohom Eliezer Goldman was talking on a public phone outside his Yeshiva on Troy Ave. in Crown Heights, when he was stabbed in the back by an unidentified assailant. He died shortly after.

The man on the other end of the line was a Jew who Avrohom had met while doing Mivtzoim – a relatively new concept in 1977. Avrohom was on the phone with the man to convince him to give his newly born daughter a Jewish name.

Pesha did not like her Jewish name growing up amongst gentiles and assimilated Jews, but when she discovered the story behind her Jewish name, and the Mesiras Nefesh of the young Bochur who died for it, she embraced not only her name, but her Jewish identity as well.

Today, Pesha Ziv lives in the holy land with her husband and three children – all who have Jewish names like her.

Pesha will be telling her story at the Keren Avrohom Eliezer Chinese auction, which will take place in Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Crown St. on Sunday, May 13th. You can support them by buying auction tickets on their website thecampfund.com.

Keren Avrohom Eliezer is a fund that helps families who are struggling financially to send their children to camp. It was founded in memory of Avrohom Eliezer Goldman, with the encouragement of the Rebbe.

  • I knew Avramie

I was a guest by the Goldman’s in the Winter of 77. He was encouraging me to wear a yarmulke in college. That did not happen while I was in college. A year and a half later, though, B”H, I went to Lubavitch Yeshiva, and donned the full uniform!

What a terrible tragedy and outrage, what happened that Summer. Broke our hearts.

  • This Sunday

The auction is going to be amazing. It will be very moving to hear her story live. Can’t wait for Sunday.

  • Prize Sponsor

I’ve sponsored a prize for the auction for the past several years without knowing the history behind the name of the camp fund. Now that I know the history of the name I feel even better that I’ve done so.
