Irene Is Here, Remain Indoors, Safety Tips

New York, NY [CHI] – Hurricane Irene has arrived in the New York City area. In addition to the hurricane warning, a tornado warning has been issued for the city until 5am on Sunday. The time for evacuation has ended—remain indoors for the remainder of the storm.

Please adhere to the following home safety tips in order to protect yourself and your family throughout the storm:

• Move as far away as possible from glass windows. There is a risk that flying debris could break and shatter windows in your home. This risk increases if you live in a high-rise building, particularly on the 10th floor or higher.

• Make sure windows and doors leading to the outside are closed.

• Find an interior room in your home with as few windows as possible and remain there.

• Fill your bathtubs and sinks with water that you can later use for washing and for flushing toilets.

• Candles are a fire hazard and can be knocked over easily. Keep an eye on them, and do not leave them unattended.

• Charge your phones and any other mobile devices that you might need.

• If you have a fireplace in your home, close the damper.

• Turn off any propane tanks.

For up-to-date information on the storm, go to www.nyc.gov/oem. If you power goes out, call 311 or text 311692 (311NYC). This will help the city identify areas that are without power. 911 would only be used for emergencies. All non-emergency calls should be directed to 311. • Im with number 1

I know seriously. Im not a floridian, a true NY er and all I see is a rainstorm- no big deal. Gosh people unless you live directly near a coast, chill a bit.

  • Floridian knows the damage Wilma brought

There is nothing wrong with keeping safe, I remember that we were terrified by hurricane Kathrina but that became a disaster for New Orleans followed at it’s tail was tropical storm Turned minor hurrican Rita… Well, what do you think happened… Floridians sustained more damage from Rita than Kathrina.. So, heed the warnings & pray as Yiddin do in Florida to beg Hashem for help… I know a lot of Yiddin do amazing teshuvah when there is such threats to human life

  • to all who say no big deal

In Florida, you guys are equipped and prepared for such weather and are quite used to dealing with it. It is not as common in New York and people need to know everything “just in case.” Better safe than sorry, folks.

  • brother from the hood

hey mister fla, meet me by kol tuv in 10min . let go 4 a walk up kingston !!!!!!!! its 4.25 am

  • to the Floridians

And if florida were facing a 2.5 foot snow dump from a blizzard you’d all be freaking out… your roofs aren’t built for that weight, your roads aren’t made for that ice, etc. It’s freaky to NY because they’re not built for hurricane weather… and they don’t keep plywood cut to size for their windows in their basements.

Not to mention, how many of your Floridians have experienced a hurricane on the 25th floor?

I’m also not one to freak out (no tape on my windows), but neither am I one to assume I know what will happen in NYC from a hurricane, just because I know what a storm of this strength would do in Florida.

  • water danger

I Surely hope people that have young kids at home, know NOT to leave bathtubs filled with water. That is a huge safety hazard. and No, the bathroom door won’t remain locked at all times.
