Weekly Photo: From Days Gone By

Crownheights.info and Lubavitch Archives present this vintage photograph of a lively discussion amongst Chassidim. Can you identify those in the picture, where and when it was taken?

Answer to last week’s photo in the extended article

Answer to last week’s photo:

During WWII the Friediker Rebbe sent messages to anyone he could, via the other Bochurim, to escape to Vilnius (Vilna), Lithuania, which at that time was not a place of danger.

The principal of the Tomchei Tmimim Yeshiva in Vilna at the time was Rabbi Yitzchak Dovber Ushpal. He was beloved by the students and became very close to them, even after they once again reunited in New York following the war.

This picture was taken around the end of 1939 or the beginning of 1940. In it Rabbi Ushpal poses with seven of the students. Standing from left to right: Rabbis Elye Gerlitzky, Yossel Wineberg and Volf Greenglass. Sitting from left to right: Rabbis Yosef Portovitz, Yossel Rodal, Y.D. Ushpal, Yosef Tennenbaum and Chaim Leibush Probst.
