Possible Alter Rebbe Portrait Revealed

This new portrait revealed Tuesday is said to be of the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder and first Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch. The portrait has been passed over from family to family in the last 200 years.

some “Lubavitcher experts” pointed out that a scar on his nose is obvious. According to Lubavitcher history, the Alter Rebbe had a scar on his nose.

The picture of the Alter Rebbe that we all know, is a verified one. It was painted when the Alter Rebbe was jailed.

I dont know but to me this portrait does not look like the Alter Rebbe according to the other original picture we all know. I am not even sure if his eyes look blue in this picture but in the other picture they do. Somehow it does not look right….of course I am not an expert but I dont see the connection exactly.

the nose seems to be too straight. also (though this is a painting, so this is more of a hergesh), the eyes lack the fire and intensity of the prison painting.

    BS”D
    Just because it’s a portrait doesn’t mean
    it’s a good likeness.

I don’t know why everyone is denying that this might be the Alter Rebbe, which in my opinion was the most powerful person (aside from the ba’ll shem tov) in the previous millennium.
Instead of saying it’s not Him, hope it is, and we have a much clearer image of where lubavitch came from.

Techie, where did you get this from? Can you provide some sources please? It could be my great-grandfather for all I know without sources. It would be beautiful if we could verify its authenticity.

  • A dumbfounded Person

In this new picture, it was obviously happier times for him.
The picture we all know was taken in prison, which wasn’t a great time in his life.
It’s great to see him in such a happy place.
