The latest craze sweeping the toy world, “the Fidget Spinner,” was invented after Catherin Hettinger visited Israel and heard about young Palestinian children throwing rocks at Israel police and civilians. The inventor said she had developed the idea so that the young children could be distracted with a soothing toy.
from the Jerusalem Post:
“It started as a way of promoting peace, and then I went on to find something that was very calming,” Hettinger said.
Hettinger said she was not upset about the popularity of the toy following the expiration in 2005 of the patent on her original product. “Maybe if it was some kind of exploitative product — like a new style of cigarettes — and my only motivation was to make money, I’d have a different attitude.”
The device is made out of either plastic or metal and has a bearing center which allows it to be spun. The gadget is intended to help reduce stress, anxiety and calm the nerves.
