After reporting and covering so many such stories it was only a matter of time that such trouble would find me.

Last night, Tuesday, at around 12:30am, I was on my way back from a wedding, walking with a friend on New York Ave and Eastern Pkwy when we were approached by a black youth who asked for the time, after which he asked for a dollar, we brushed him off and continued walking, thats when he began demanding money from us, at which point five of his cohorts began crossing the street towards us.

It was at this time that I pulled my Shomrim radio off my belt and put a distress call over the air and Shomrim members began responding from all over, at the same time my friend and I began chasing the would be muggers who began fleeing upon seeing the radio. The perps all fled up New York Ave, part of the group turned down Lincoln Pl while the rest turned on St Johns Pl. At the same time my friend got on the phone with 911 and was giving updates as to where we were during the chase.

Six Black Youths Tried To Mug Me

A total of twenty Crown Heights Shomrim Members responded and spread out across the area along with major backup support from the Williamsburg Shomrim Division who responded in large numbers as well. The amazing coordination between the two groups led to the apprehension of one of the perp, who turned out to be 15 years old. Police officers of the 77th Precinct responded in major numbers as well, from regular uniform officers to plainclothes anti crime unit, who handled the incident properly and very professionally.

After the arrest of the youth my friend and I were taken to the precinct to fill out a report, and watch police release the youth into his parents custody, the officer informed us that the Precincts Youth Officer and Detectives will be in touch with me and the perp regarding this incident.

I would like to thank all the members of both Shomrim Divisions, Crown Heights and Williamsburg for the amazing response, and to the officers of the 77th precinct for the amazing response and handling of this incident!

Wiliamsburg and Crown Heights are unuique neighrborhoods. Each excells in there key fields. Chabad excells in Kiruv and Willy excells in gmilas Chesed ( and convict apprehension tactics). WHile both have differences I’d highly recommend we continue this bond.
Forget the old animosities – we all have issues. But I have noticed CH Hatzolo Paremdics going in to Willy an number of times when hatzoloh/medics were not available in Willy. Its nice to know we can count on security issues perhaps with them as I know they can count on us for hatzoloh support. I am told CH has the highest number of ALS providers (Paremedics), about 20, in ratio to other neighrborhoods.

Would it be possible for girls to have radios in order to call Shomrim more easily? If we take out cell phones and start flipping through our Contact Lists, the shvartzes will grab our cell phones! And C’mon, they can steal money from bochurim, but we need to be a little more worried about our girls… Thanks, and Kol Hakavod to Shomrim!

    Re: girl

You shouldn’t have to flip through your cell phone you should always call 9-1-1 only three easy numbers then you should call shomrim 718-774-3333.

If someone demand something from you. Try to go to a well lit location, where is is well populated cause it’s less likely for them to demand something from you.

Go to a store where you feel is well populated or a building where someone can comfort you until the police or shomrim gets to the scene.

  • Wondering

Wonder what would have happened to you if you weren’t a Shomrim member? Would Williamsburg have responded if it would have been me in trouble.

Oh. I know the answer. They didn’t when I was attacked.

My point is, your radio scared the little creeps off. The rest of us don’t have radios. Bottomline…violent crime is out of control here. And no one who can help is helping, including the cops. So how do the rest of us keep safe?

    Glad you weren’t hurt.

UM ”GIRL” BOYS DONT GET RADIOS EITHER ITS THE PEOPLE THAT ARE ON THE ORGINIZATION THAT GET THE RADIOS. AND ALSO YOU COULD PUT SHOMRIM AS A SPEDD DIAL IF YOUR PHONE HAS THAT FEATURE.

  • tipster

put the shomrim number in your phone… and save it as

    ‘a shomrim’

So it comes up first in your address book…. no need to go looking anymore

    Tipster:

That was the most intelligent comment this blog ever had. Thanks for the tip!

Btw 9-1-1 works even when your keypad is locked. Just dial the numbers even without unlocking the keypad, and when you finish pressing all three digits it will give you the call option. With that and Tipster’s tip, you should have backup in no time. Hashem should help that you never need it!

    Wondering,

True Shomrim Williamsburg wouldnt respond to just any call here in the CH, as we wouldn’t go running to Williamsburg, but when a Member puts over a distress code everyone starts responding. As is the case with missing persons, all divisions join forces and search together.

If C”V there would have been a situation where we didn’t have enough manpower, we would call in all other divisions.

  • Disgusted withthe situation

    Hello?!?! Is this a typo?
"the perp… turned out to be 15 years old. Police officers of the 77th Precinct responded …. handled the incident ***properly and very professionally***.

…. police release the youth into his parents custody"!!!! and exactly whose custody do you thing this punky brat was in BEFORE he was released into his parents custody? Why, in his parents custody, of course! That’s where.
They obviously have no control over the brat, and he should have been remanded into fostercare or juvenile lockup.
Nebach that they let him out.
Webby, when he doesn’t show up in court, and the Youth Officer calls you to let you know that he skipped town, you’ll let us know, ok?
I give the cops NO BROWNIE POINTS on this one. It’s a real disgrace.
Oh, and what about the other 5 delinquents? Nadah. Nothing. Zip.
In baseball they used to taunt "We want a pitcher, not a belly itcher!"
So how about "We want cop protection, not cop dereliction!"

The same story happened to me about 5 years ago. One guy came over to ask the time, and within a few seconds, he was joined by his friends who were hiding behind some trees.

I started walking towards the street (in middle of the block) and they were eventually scared away by the exposure.

BH you are OK! As for the perp, let’s hope that the streets take care of him, because otherwise he will be able to continue his career after he gets a politically correct sentence of 10 days probation, suspended or whatever juveniles get these days.

  • grammer correction

TO "Somebody wrote" and most Brooklyners (even most
    Americans too?):

The word "YOUR" is a possessive one – it means your
    table.

The word "YOU’RE" means YOU ARE, so your comment
should read "At least you’re okay!

And B"H, okay is the main thing.
