Daily News: 580 Crown Slacking on Window Guards

The New York Daily News published a report this morning, accusing some residents of the condos at 580 Crown St. of dragging their feet on the installation of window safety guards in the aftermath of the horrific accident that resulted in the death of 2-year-old Levi Nemon three weeks ago.

The Daily News article quotes one resident of the building as saying that she doesn’t want to install the guards because they are unsightly, while another resident expresses reservations about the costs involved.

Though it is indeed important for all parents of young children living on higher floors to install window safety guards, the article has the tone of a hit piece, with the reporter making observations of the building’s exterior while failing to draw a distinction between units that have young children residing in them, and those that don’t – the latter of which clearly do not need any such protections. (The article only confirms the existence of one apartment with young children that lacks the window guards.)

The window guards are required by law in all apartments with children ages 10 and younger, and city inspectors have issued nearly 30,000 window-guard violations since November 2011, though the violations do not carry fines.

“”the article has the tone of a hit piece”” — didn’t read the article but yeah, of course. The purpose is sensationalism which sells papers. There’s no intent to inform motivating popular news publication.

So here will come a slew of comments which are prompted by the sensationalism, as public opinion increasingly resembles a frothing mob. Always reacting. Reacting to what is presented rather than to what is present.

The farchanyukim have got it right.

You should read the article before offering an uninformed opinion.

  • Facts

What they fail to mention is, this building is a condo building and as such it the sole responsibility of the unit owners to install, unlike regular apartment building where its the responsibility or the landlord and management. But really who cares about facts of the law.

  • safety

The safety of your children should come first!!!!! that means spending money on window gaurds!!!!!!

  • Safety first

It should be a priority. It can be difficult for some families but take some good advice and make it happen. I remember when the condos were just brand new I thought wow they should really have window guards. Everyone should only hear an have good news!

#4 said it the only way it can be said clearly. You can have a classy couch and beautiful accoutrements, but bars save lives. It is an obligation k’halacha

  • Resident of building

Not only did the units come without window guards, but even in this “luxury” condo building, the windows came without screens. If we want screens: we have to buy ourselves. At least they came with glass and the toilets came with a seat!!

Many of these apartments are occupied by elderly couples without children. There is no law requiring every apt to have window bars, only those with children under the age of 10. For an older couple who are enjoying the fresh air and unobstructed view, window guards are a huge inconvenience and also a large expense.
