UPS Driver Robbed at Gunpoint

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — A UPS driver was robbed at gunpoint earlier today by a fearless and calculating bandit, who ditched his firearm and later went back to recover it. The robbery took place in broad daylight right near Kingston Avenue, and police ignored crucial information provided by Shomrim.

The driver, Vladimir Lopez, a veteran UPS driver who has been servicing the neighborhood for years, told police that he was attacked as he was preparing to make a delivery on Crown Street between Albany and Kingston Avenues, when the gun toting thug boarded his truck and put the gun to his head and demanded a specific package.

“At first I thought he was playing and I told him to quit playing, but when he shoved the gun harder [into] my head I saw he was serious and I gave him what he wanted” said Lopez, adding that the his phone was also taken.

It took some time until he found a phone and called police. They responded and began searching for the suspect, who was described as a black male in the late teens or early 20s, wearing a black down coat with the North Face logo, approximately 5”7 and 120 to 140 lbs.

While this was going on, a Jewish woman called Shomrim and notified them that a black man with a matching description dumped a gun into the front garden of a Jewish home. A number of a Shomrim volunteers rushed to the scene while calling 911; when they got there, the woman informed them that man had returned and retrieved the firearm.

One Shomrim volunteer approached the officers at the scene and informed them of the development, but he was brushed off by cops.

A UPS supervisor took over Mr. Lopez’s route while he was taken to the precinct to file an incident report.

  • must be a purim joke

if you know this guy you would know he cant get robbed, this man is as brave and crazy as you can get

  • Video Cameras!

I think that whoever can afford it should install video cameras around their house or business.
There are some very good deals occasionally on the sales/deals websites every now and then. You can buy a system with 4 cameras for less than 300$.
Perhaps the community council should organize a special rate or get grants.

  • lopez lover

  • feel so bad for the UPS guy

he is really such a cheerful man, really nice. glad he is ok, but very upsetting. kol hakavod to all those who tried to help

  • FED UP WITH CH COPS!

THIS WAS NOT A RANDOM HIT:

You will note he asked for a specific package. He knew what was in that package – where it came from or where it was heading. He needed to intercept it – why? The police have a bigger deal going on here than they let on – or could be bothered with.

Give it a few years and you’ll find they could have busted a drug cartel but more lives will be lost before that happens.

To #3 – it might be convenient to you to have your package left next door, next door, next door, but i find it extremely frustrating. I end up having to go searching for my package. I would much rather it be redelivered the next day or left on my front porch.

  • sick police

Why must this website continually make negative statements about the NYPD? Is that what you were taught – to be critical and point out flaws? And how do you know the NYPD did nothing? Before you make any more unkind and potentially untrue statements why don’t you stop and remember that many police officers are Jewish and serve all communities and that police officers put their lives on the line. Why can’t you remember that a police officer, a father of three girls, like many of you, was killed only a month ago by someone who should have never been on the streets. Or that another police officer, with an ewborn baby girl, like many of you, was just shot in the face and miraculously survived? Be grateful they are there because many of you would never be able to do what they do for us.

“Why must this website continually make negative statements about the NYPD?”

Because they are usually lazy and ineffectual, as we’ve all seen NUMEROUS times.

“Is that what you were taught – to be critical and point out flaws?”

Yup. That’s how you improve – by recognizing shortcomings – your own and others’.

“And how do you know the NYPD did nothing?”

We don’t *know*. But we rely on their proven track record of incompetence and malfeasance.

“Before you make any more unkind and potentially untrue statements why don’t you stop and remember that many police officers are Jewish”

How many do you know? Not many, I will wager.

“and serve all communities and that police officers put their lives on the line.”

I think it’s worth pointing out that being a LEO isn’t a particularly dangerous job – not even top ten, in the stats I’ve seen. Construction is worse, taxi driving is worse, and the prize usually goes to commercial fishermen.

“Be grateful they are there because many of you would never be able to do what they do for us.”

If the police *didn’t* exist, Nechama, we’d organize to defend ourselves – and do a better job than they do. Look at Shomrim, how good a job it does with one hand tied behind its back! Imagine how effective it could be if it could have law enforcement powers …

to #12 whenever a ups driver leaves a package at a neighbors house they always leave a note on your door letting you know that it was left at a neighbors house & it says on the note which neighbor has your package.so if you come home & you see a ups sticker on your door it says on the ups sticker which neighbor signed for it so all you have to do is go to that neighbors house & pick up the package from them.they don,t always leave the package by a neighbor but when they do they always leave a note on your door letting you know which neighbor has your package.

EXCUSE ME? TRUE THE NYPD HAS LOTS OF GOOD OFFICERS BUT 95% OF THEM ABUSE THEIR POWER, AND LOVE TO CONTROL EVERYONE ELSE!

THE BAD ONES MAKE THEM ALL LOOK BAD

  • ups in the know

    Here is the real story

The man came to the ups driver and asked for HIS personal package, when asked for ID by the driver he responded saying he does not have any!

The ups driver then told him he will not be able to give him the package without proper ID the man then took out a gun and took his package!

The ups driver is off due to being shook up and in fear of the man coming back to him

    You said:
“the comunity councel won’t (what won’t they do) do nothing!” so since you say they won’t do nothing =do something, what will they do????
    Then you said:
”maybe shomrim will get camras for us” agen y need shomrim if the cc will do it?????????
In short your whole comment was one big contradiction so y open your mouth to begin with?????
    (p. S. I’m not a fan of cc but looks like you are (confused))

  • to #18

to #18 – that may be your experience. I have never received a slip with the address where to get my package. I always end up searching, or calling ups and being put on hold for half an hour until they can look up the address. Extremely frustrating.
