Lubavitcher Featured In Trident Gum Commerical

A YouTube clip released three weeks ago by Kraft Foods in order to market a new gum features an eclectic group of New Yorkers dancing on the subway, among them a Lubavitcher Chossid.

The thirty one second clip, which has received close to 10,000 hits, depicts a diverse group of people, including a Chinese woman, an African-American man with dreadlocks, a woman in a business suit, a long haired young man sporting headphones, and a chasidic man dressed in a long coat with a black hat and a long grey beard, spontaneously bursting out into song and dance, after one of the passengers on the train tastes the product, Trident Layers gum.

A spokesperson for Trident gum says that they have no knowledge of the religious affiliations of the actor dressed in Chasidic garb.

“Our intent in creating the spot was to show a diverse cross-section of people that you might run into on the New York City subway,” Melissa Batchilder, manager of corporate affairs at Kraft Foods told VIN News. “An actor came to our casting sessions in Chasidic dress and that’s what he also wore for the spot. We are not aware of his religious background, and as a course of process, it’s not a question we would ask.”

Trident Layers is not a kosher certified product.

Update: The actor has been identified as Roger Marks, a real-life Lubavitcher Chossid from Los Angeles who works as an actor in his spare time.

Please note: the commercial depicts women singing and dancing in an un-tznius manner. The link is intended for women only.

  • So What

As long as it’s the goy who chews the gum why can’t a Jew be happy for the goy?

  • What religion?

In PA, I once went for a job in downtown, for a major insurance company. When the receptionist extended her hand to greet me, I apologized, explaining that my religious beliefs prohibit me form shaking hands with non-family women. She said, “Oh, that’s interesting. What religion are you?”

  • Realist Jew

Love the diversity in the video, but I have to keep it real. No subway car is that clean in NYC. Lol

I don’t blame this yid. I am sure he doesn’t do this from an abundance of a parnassa. It is time for people to get an education, so that can support themselves bekavod.

Kiddushin 30b – “whoever doesnt teach his son a trade, teaches his son robbery.”

By the way people don’t judge before you know something

He is not only a jew but he is a lubavitcher out of california.

He does it for parnossah for his large family. He has an agent and he auditions for any commercials or any shows seeking a rabbi.

if you think something is wrong with that go get a therapist!!!

#2, Non-Jewish actors who try to dress chassidic usually get it wrong; the average person may not be able to see the difference, but we can. I haven’t seen the video, but at least in this still he looks authentic, so chances are that he is.

Your kids seeing this website doesn’t give you the right to determine what someone else puts up on that website. How about being a responsible parent and actually policing your children’s internet use instead of expecting the internet to do it for you?

  • ?!?!?!

If at the bottom of the article it clearly states that “the commercial depicts women singing and dancing in an un-tznius manner” then why is it on this website?Saying “ It is intended for the viewing of women only” does not make it any better. As if frum women and girls can be looking at such things.
Furthermore, why ‘place a stumbling block in front of a blind man’? Don’t put viewers (especially men) in a position where they will be tempted to watch something “un-tznius”

  • Trident is 100% TREIF!!

A frum person advertising a treif product is a big PROBLEM! It is something to klap al-chet for!

  • Oh c-mon

You can’t be serious lucky no. 13. Women see women dance all the time. And if the men can’t heed the warning and not view it, they shouldn’t be on the Internet to begin with because no doubt there is no shortage of other “temptations” online.

#15, Why is it a problem to advertise a treife product? The vast majority of people have Hashem’s full permission to eat it.

#15, this is a parnosa and therefore this is a halokhich question whether you are allowed to or not. I am certain a Rov had hard time with this one, but look at you, you are shooting from the hip.

  • Satmar & Ger

y is a frum man lubavitcher dancing with a bunch of non jewish ladies who r dancing in a very lewd way ? Could any1 explain that ? Would u c a Satmar, Ger or Viznitz Rabbi doing that ? I think its a chilul hashem, Mr. Marks I thought u knew better.

  • I was not consulted

There is a subgroup of Chassidim and their lookalikes who portray chassidim in films and commercials. They get paid more if the beard and peyos are authentic. So why did my husband shave everything off after a being filmed in a clip directed by Madonna? I guess that tells something about the allure of klipa. It’s a dangerous job.

    the wife:
thank you number 24; you are so right. Fyi, Mr Marks was simply jumping up and down, here and there for a film crew of about 50 on a sound stage in L.A. You can’t really say he was dancing with women. He consulted with a rav before the shoot and since he was not holding or chewing the gum he was given full permission to to do the commercial. Believe me he has turned down many commercials and tv shows that were inappropriate.
Vahavta Laracha Kamocha. Don’t judge him until you are in his shoes.

You people are honestly putting down a man for working an honest few days work to support his family? Do you know what it’s like to support a family of 8 (that’s how big his family is) with tuition to Jewish private schools and etc. It’s not cheap. This commerical was a bracha, it helped pay a lot of bills. Stop putting down a man of whom you know nothing about and put your own life in perspective and say Baruch Hashem for a roof over your head, fodd in your mouth and life to live.
