Stolen Crown Returned to Chabad House

A crown that was stolen from a synagogue has finally been returned to its rightful place.

The crown belongs to one of the Torahs at the Chabad By the Ocean in Hollywood.

A Holocaust survivor gave the gold crown to the synagogue, but Rabbi Dovid Kudan realized it had disappeared over a month ago. “We have the place for the two Torahs, and this is the place for the crown,” said Rabbi Kudan, “and the crown was missing.”

Police say the thief who stole the crown sold it to a North Miami gold buyer. When store owner Michael Kaplan returned, he knew something was not right. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that not too many people are running around with Torahs,” he said.

A few days later, authorities said, the suspect tried to sell another crown, but the store recognized him and contacted police.
The suspect was arrested, and the store sprang into action to find the crown’s rightful owner.

It didn’t take long. On Tuesday, Rabbi Kudan was reunited with the missing crown. He said, “I really didn’t think we were going to get it back. I thought someone was going to take it and melt it down for its value.”

According to Rabbi Kudan, he and other members of the synagogue were prepared to go door-to-door to search for the gold crown. However, he is grateful for the kindness of strangers like Kaplan. “It gives you hope,” he said, “and it teaches you to trust in God.”
