Picture of the Day

A photograph documenting a meeting between Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook and Winston Churchill [Palestine, 1921?]. Photographer unknown.

The photograph, which depicts Rabbi Kook speaking with Churchill, was evidently taken in 1921 during Churchill’s visit to Palestine during his term as Secretary of State for the Colonies. During the visit, Churchill stayed in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and other locations, and met with many public figures.

Loathe that I am to threaten to pop your balloon but the more I view this photograph and compare with other photographs of WC, the less convinced I become that it is indeed him. It just doesn’t seem to match with WC’s ear, chin and eyes.

I’m thinking that it could be T E Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia. He was in Palestine around that time when Churchill met with Rabbi Kook. This photo is definitely not Churchill.

Even a brief viewing of photograph’s of Lawrence will prove that the above photo. is not of him. And AF, I followed your link and, and….I am still waiting for proof.

Churchill did not wear a top hat or formal garb in any of the pictures of him from the 1921 visit to the Holy Land. Even when meeting with the High Commissioner and with Emir Abdullah, he wore less formal attire. As well, the structure of the ear differs and as has been noted, the height is wrong.
