Weekly Photo: From Days Gone By

CrownHeights.info and Lubavitch Archives present this vintage photograph of Chasidim putting on Tefilin with soldiers. Can you identify those in the picture, when and where it was taken?

Rabbi Yissachar Dov Rokeach, the Belzer Rebbe, exits 770 after an afternoon Yechidus with the Rebbe. In the Yechidus the Rebbe discussed with him, among other topics: learning Chassidus in the Belz boys’ and girls’ schools, “outreach,” and how he spells his name Yisachar.

At the beginning of the Yechidus, the Rebbe told him to remove his coat, “it is hot.” He answered that he came here to be warmed up, to which the Rebbe responded, “the levush separates.”

The Rebbe asked him about his activities in Israel, to which he responded, “the Rebbe does great wonders there.” The Rebbe said, “you came here to tell me what you are doing in Israel, instead you are telling me what I am doing there.”

  • Middle to late 60-s

L-R Rabbi Avrohom Shemtov, Yitzchock Meir Kagan a”h, Hirshel Schifrin and Zalman Lipsker mixed in with a few Jewish soldiers from the US army.

Shemtov, Schifrin & Lipsker were shluchim to Philadelphia, and this scene seems to be an event with Jewish soldiers to which Kagan came to speak. Those days Kagan was one of the few Chabad speakers par excellence.

The one I thought is Rabbi Kagan is really Rabbi Aaron Popack A”H who was a shliach in Philadelphia.
