INBOX: How an Apartment Showing Led to a Shabbos Meal
by Rivka
A few weeks ago, I was showing an apartment and noticed my client was wearing a Magen Dovid around her neck. As we walked through, she asked if it would be possible to get a physical front door key, saying it would be a dealbreaker for her. That’s when I thought maybe she’s keeping Shabbos.
Then I saw her checking out the oven more than the typical client does and started thinking maybe she keeps kosher, too. It reminded me of the Shabbos meals I go to nearly every week with a host who loves welcoming new Jews in the neighborhood and making Shabbos feel so special.
I asked someone for advice on how to see if she’d want to join a Shabbos meal, and the answer was simple: “Just ask her. What does it hurt?”
So I did. She was so grateful and excited and joined that Shabbos for a meal. The host even mentioned she might come for Rosh Hashana as well.
It was such a small moment, but it reminded me how easy it can be to connect with people. Sometimes all it takes is asking. It also made me think about how we, as a community, can be more gracious hosts, opening our homes to Jews who are looking to reconnect with their Jewish side in the coming year. A simple invitation can really make someone feel welcomed.
