NYC Marathon Cancelled Due to Public Outrage

The marathon that once brought New York City’s people together for 40 years has come to a screeching halt because of the backlash it is receiving in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The NYC Marathon drew 45,103 runners in 2010 and is one of the largest marathons in the world.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and marathon director Mary Wittenberg agreed on Friday to cancel the long-standing race (scheduled for today, Sunday), which once brought solidarity to the city. Forgotten victims are outraged and the public disapproves of having the NYC Marathon while they experience great need.

Race participants have spent thousands of dollars to attend the marathon, and goods and services were set to be provided to the runners, yet the devastated victims still stand in great need of life’s bare necessities.

“While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division,” the statement said.

Here’s a short list of items planned for the runners

• 4,500 lbs. Of pasta
• 32,000 gallons of water
• Several boxes of apples
• 173 sanitation workers

Some of the race participants have indicated that they will stay and volunteer to help the city recover, while others are disappointed because they have spent a bundle of money on preparing for the marathon.

The decision is final though, no NYC Marathon for Sunday.

    The kinus hashluchim is different from l’havdil a marathon. Shluchim come from all over the world in connection with the Rebbe’s holy work to hasten the arrival of moshiach tzidkenu. The world needs moshiach now.

    If the ruthless heartless terrorist would try a last minute devastation before the elections it would be the NYC Marathon. Thank God they canceled the event. since the resources of security is at a low. But God always protects a great and kind nation. God Bless America. The hurricane was such a tremendous force things could have been much worse.

    the kinnus does not tap into the volunteer effort or public employees (fire, police, etc. Generators are not being redirected, nor are the newly homeless being displaced to accommodate the shluchim.
