Australian Lawmakers Agree to Maintain Shechita

Australian Jewish leaders praised the country’s Labor government for retaining an exemption for the kosher slaughter of animals.

The move followed a meeting of the Primary Industries Ministerial Council in Melbourne on Oct. 29 that discussed kosher and halal ritual slaughter, neither of which allow stunning.

Animal rights activists and other lobbyists claim that kosher ritual slaughter, or shechita, is inhumane.

In a letter Monday, Executive Council of Australian Jewry President Dr. Danny Lamm thanked Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Joseph Ludwig for his “wise decision” to maintain shechita in Australia.

What has this got to do with lawmakers? It was the ministers who decided this, not Parliament!

And all they decided was to do nothing. There was only a very slight chance that they were ever going to agree to the animal activists, at the price of destroying the lucrative halal market. The Jews were an afterthought in this whole thing.

When i was in school, i went to the halal/kosher slaughter house where they do some of the beef/sheep for melb … we watched them do a few sheep before they switched over to kosher, they were definately stunning the sheep before they were doing the “shechita”

Australia exports alot of premium meat, so I dont think they would loose their asian exports over a few greenies.
