Princeton, NJ — Last week N.J. Gov. Jon S. Corzine broke his left leg in two places, as well as six ribs, his sternum and a vertebra – and after seeing crash photos, his doctor says he’s “lucky.”

The Hoboken Democrat, whose official SUV crashed into a guard rail on the Garden State Parkway Thursday night, is also breathing with the help of a ventilator and has a feeding tube, but it could have been worse.

Yesterday morning, the hospital’s trauma chief, Dr. Steven E. Ross, said Corzine was stable and improving, and that he could be removed from a ventilator within the next few days. Corzine remained heavily sedated because the pain from chest injuries made it difficult to breathe, Ross said.

“There’s no way to tell specifically how close he came to more severe injuries, but based on pictures I’ve seen of the crash, I think he’s lucky,” Ross said.

Corzine’s daughter, Jennifer Pasani, told reporters she and her brother Jeffrey visited their father yesterday morning and that they “had a really good vibe from him.”

“He’s a fighter. We really believe that he’s going to be OK,” she said, her voice trailing off with emotion.

Corzine, 60, did not suffer any brain damage in the crash. But he won’t be able to resume his duties as governor for several days, if not weeks, and he won’t walk normally for months, said the surgeon who performed surgery on the governor Thursday night at Cooper University Hospital.

Rabbi Dovid Dubov, shaliach in Princeton, NJ told Shturem.net that shluchim are praying for the recovery of Gov. Corzine. “He has shown great friendship and concern for the Jewish community and for the land of Israel,” said Dubov.
