Reb Mendel receiving a bottle from the Rebbe at 'Kos Shel Bracha'

Today, the 13th of Nissan, marks the first Yartzeit of Reb Mendel Shemtov. Reb Mendel’s personality and his message that came through in all his actions, words, and thoughts were dedicated to the Rebbe and his Shluchim. He was not an official Shliach although on many occasions he was given specific missions from the Rebbe. He was a businessman. However, his real business that continuously burned in his soul - was Shluchim, Shlichus and to bring Nachas Ruach to the Rebbe who he loved with every single fiber of his Neshama.

However, his real business that continuously burned in his soul – was Shluchim, Shlichus and to bring Nachas Ruach to the Rebbe who he loved with every single fiber of his Neshama.

On the top of Reb Mendel’s priority list was the education of the children of Shluchim. Together with the Shluchim Office, he helped to support small Chaderim, organized learning over the phone, curriculum for children being home-schooled and weekly Parsha newsletters.

Reb Mendel’s dedication to everything in his life is followed by his children who are involved in his endeavors. During this past year, the Shemtovs pledged one million dollars to dedicate the Chinuch Yaldei Hashluchim department of the Shluchim office to the memory of Reb Mendel.

Reb Mendel was a wonderful, warm, and giving person to whom hundreds of people – young and old – turned for advice and help. He inspired, empowered and materially enabled poor people to succeed in business. More importantly, he educated them to apply their business success to the needs of the greater community.

Rabbi Shemtov A”H was a true Chassid in every sense of the word. He was also a true mentsch, and a tremendous Baal Tzedaka & Baal Chesed. Crown Heights is not the same. May he be a Meilitz Yasher for all of the Klal, and for all of us who were inspired just by knowing him.

    what a shame.
in one year three of our finest left us, mendel shemtov, shimshon stock and gedalia schaffer.
we have to make a cheshbon nefesh and increase our ahavas israel.
these three baalei tzedaka wished for nothing more than ahavas israel in our community, its just right that each one of us make this cheshbon hanefesh.
