New City Council District Map Published, Crown Heights Remains Divided

The NYC Districting Commission has released the final maps for the redrawn City Council Districts, and not much has changed for Crown Heights.

NYC Districting Commission Chair Dennis M. Walcott published the new maps Wednesday, saying “These maps are the product of hard work of the Commissioners, staff, and thousands of New Yorkers who participated in this process.”

The new maps, which will remain in use for the next decade, took eight months to redraw, consuming 100 hours and involved 13,000 community submissions.

“We’ve held 20 public meetings and hearings and listened to over 21 hours of public testimony both in person and virtually,” Wallcott said. “We thank New Yorkers for your participation in NYC Democracy, which has made our new City Council districts.”

For the Crown Heights Jewish community, the changes appear to be minimal, providing little relief from the three way split that has divided the community between the 35th, 40th, and 41st districts.

In June of 2021, The Jewish Crown Heights community members living in the 35th City Council District banded together and voted in Councilmember Crystal Hudson, proving that the community has voting power. Still that power remains deeply fractured as the community continues to grow, primarily into the 40th and 41st Council Districts.
